According to tradition, the body of this sanctuary’s famous Black Madonna was painted by Luke the Evangelist himself.
Founded in the 12th century on the ruins of a pagan temple, the Sanctuary of Montevergine as it stands today is a 20th century construction built to house the church’s many historic treasures. During World War II, it’s said the King of Italy secretly stored the Shroud of Turin in the Sanctuary of Montevergine to keep it safe during the war. After enjoying the stupendous views - the Bay of Naples is visible on a clear day, visitors can step inside the basilica to view its wealth of religious art. Two chapels date back to the 13th century, one of which houses a 16th century canopy, while the other has a 17th. For many, however, the highlight is the revered Black Madonna, a 13th century masterpiece made even more unique because the Virgin Mary’s body is said to have been painted by St. Luke, and attached to the surrounding painting made centuries later.
