Mexico
This charming little chapel brings a slice of Rhineland respite to Mexico.
Right away, you can tell that the Santuario de la Virgen de Schoenstatt isn’t your typical Mexican church - the whitewashed walls and steeply sloping roof have a distinctively alpine feel to them. That’s because the church was built by the members of the Schoenstatt Movement, which was founded by Father Joseph Kentenich while he was interred at the Dachau concentration camp. After the war, his views of spreading a sense of community caught on, and today, the Schöenstatt Movement has a presence in 42 countries. Though only built in 1980, the Santuario de la Virgen de Schoenstatt has become a pillar of the local community, holding events and weddings to help the faithful live according to their morals. But even for non-believers, the charming church and its quiet gardens filled with local species offer a place to find serenity.
