Shrine of Our Lady of Remedies

An alluring centerpiece to the sunset, this church atop a great pyramid is a double threat, beauty and history.

About

Resting on the Tlachihualtepetl pyramid overlooking Cholula, this stunning church is truly a view in itself, while also providing a breathtaking view of Cholula. This church was erected in the 16th century in a neoclassical style with tiled domes and painted a warm, burnt yellow. One of the reasons people travel to this church is to see the image of Our Lady of Remedies, she is carved and gilded and put on display in the church as it is her namesake. She was brought to Mexico by Captain Juan Rodríguez de Villafuerte, in hopes it would protect him during his travels. Twenty years after the Spanish defeated the Aztecs, she was discovered by indigenous people under an aloe plant, which is why she is known as the Lady of Remedies. Whether you are pious, or chasing the best views and architecture, this church has enough beauty and history for everyone.
