The stunning natural environment surrounding this monastery has been drawing visitors for centuries.
Hidden away on a plateau in the Ovčar-Kablar gorge, the Srentenje Monastery is one of the country’s most unknown outside of the region. The tranquil mountainscape surrounding the monastery is unmatched, offering visitors sweeping views throughout the crests and valleys below. The complex was founded by women in the 16th century and is home to a vastly impressive collection of manuscripts as well as a 17th-century baptismal font. While the exact history of this palace is still being researched, there is evidence to suggest that the main church burned down several times in the past and was restored by Nikifor Maksimovic, a monk who eventually became the bishop. The monastery is one of 10 in the Ovčar-Kablar gorge, in line with the area’s nickname of “Serbian Holy Mountain.” Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the monastery and trek through the surrounding gorge.
