Stockalper Palace

This stunning mansion was the largest private home built in Switzerland in the 17th century.

About

In the 17th century, Kaspar Stockalper built a trade empire, including a monopoly on salt, a mountain trade pass, and even a canal. The “King of Simplon" used his massive fortune to erect the largest private building of the century, complete with towers and gilded onion domes. Stockalper didn’t get to spend much time enjoying his monumental mansion - shortly after it was completed, the locals revolted and forced him to flee to Italy. Today, visitors can admire the estate’s striking Renaissance architecture and its manicure gardens before heading inside for a tour of the elegant interiors, such as the impressive main hall, which still has its original 17th century panelling. The castle museum is dedicated to Stockalper's fascinating rise and fall.
