This passionate conservation center is working to save the Sun Bear by educating the public.
Opened in 2004, the Sun Bear Conservation Center provides a safe home to Balikpapan’s threatened mascot. Once ranging across Southeast Asia, habitat loss, poaching, and ‘traditional’ medicine have decimated the Sun Bear population. The Sun Bear Conservation Center was created to educate the public about these creatures, and provide a home to 5 rescued Sun Bears that were being kept as pets. The 1.3 ha natural enclosure keeps the bears happy, while the largest Sun Bear information exhibit in Asia, along with exhibits on Borneo’s rich biodiversity, and the distinction between domesticated and wild animals (the center also rescues stray cats and dogs) educate visitors.
