Unfortunately for Lisbon, a catastrophic earthquake reduced much of the city to rubble in 1755, and it was not until recently that the city was redesigned and constructed into an open rectangular layout with two main squares for congregating. These squares delineate Lisbon's primary zones with thriving commercial hubs filled with eateries, theaters, cafes, and the port. The port often welcomes ships worldwide, including Asia, Africa, and Europe.
