About Malaga
The coastal city of Malaga, the sixth-largest in Spain, has a history dating back to 770 BC, when the Phoenicians first settled it in an area known then as Malaka. Over the years, various civilizations ruled Malaga, including Romans, Greeks, Moors, and Christians, each leaving a significant impact on the city.
Today, Malaga is known for attractions that originated during these periods, such as the famous Roman amphitheater, the Cathedral of Malaga, as well as the Alcazaba of Malaga, and Gibralfaro Castle.
Malaga is the birthplace of the world-famous painter Pablo Picasso, who was born in 1881 and lived there for 10 years before moving to A Coruรฑa and Barcelona later in his life. Picasso was always proud of his Andalusian roots. His hometown and its surroundings influenced the artistโs work, which can now be admired at the Picasso Museum in Malaga, which was opened in 2003.
The passion for art in Malaga does not stop there. As you wander through the sun-drenched streets, you will also discover urban masterpieces coloring the city in vibrant tones. On a similar note, since 1998 Malaga has been hosting one of the most important events in Spain, the Malaga Film Festival. This event is held every year to promote Spanish cinematography to gain recognition not only on a national level.
And that is just a small part of what Malaga has to offer. From its fabulous beaches, buildings steeped in history, and rich culture to its seafood delights and laid-back and friendly locals, Malaga has been attracting millions of visitors each year.
From Seville to Malaga: travel tips
Despite the short distance between the two cities, there are a few things worth keeping in mind. Make your trip from Seville to Malaga as seamless as possible with these two tips:
Learn about Malagaโs coffee culture
It is not an easy job to order a coffee in Malaga, so you will need a little study session before you sit and relax at one of Malaga's charming cafes.
For pure black coffee lovers it is pretty simple: ask for a cafรฉ solo, and you are good to go. But for those who drink their coffee with milk, thatโs where the real fun begins. If you want your coffee to have 10% milk, ask for cafรฉ largo, but if you want 40% milk, you should ask for cafรฉ solo corto. Or maybe you want coffee that barely has coffee in it? Then go for cafรฉ nube, which contains 90% of milk and just 10% of coffee.
These are just some of the coffee types you can order according to your preferences. Make sure you learn them all!
Go on a day trip with a rental car
Malaga is definitely worth visiting from end to end but there are also some jewels in the surroundings of the city that you absolutely cannot miss. The best and most comfortable way to do so is by going on a day trip with a rental car, as you wonโt have to worry about public transport being late. Some places worth visiting and that are not too far from Malaga are Cueva de Nerja, Fuengirola, and Mijas Pueblo.

Things to do when you get to Malaga
While it is hard to choose just a handful of things to visit or do once you reach Barcelona, we assure you these recommendations will be the highlight of your trip:
Drench yourself in the sun at the sandy beaches
Malaga is famous for its pristine, palm-tree-filled beaches lined along the Mediterranean coast, so itโs an experience that you cannot miss!
There are around 300 sunny days a year in Malaga, so unless you visit from December to February, when the temperatures are not as pleasant for swimming, you should expect nice weather for water activities, such as paddleboarding or windsurfing. The most famous beach in Malaga is La Malagueta which is not far from the city center, just around half an hourโs walk away.
Learn about Malagaโs history at the Alcazaba
The Alcazaba is an ancient Moorish fortress built between 1057 and 1063. It is undoubtedly one of the most iconic monuments not only in Malaga but also in Spain, as it showcases and tells stories about the Islamic rule period in the country.
As you enter, you will be able to explore the remains of the ancient defensive structures, the patios, palaces, gardens, and so much more. While you are there, make sure you also visit the Castle of Gibralfaro.
Connect with nature at the botanical garden
Escape from the city and visit Malagaโs botanical garden La Concepciรณn, which will make you feel like youโre in the middle of a jungle! In these beautiful gardens, you will find more than 25,000 plants, each of them blooming at different times.
To avoid crowds, it is recommended to visit either during the week or early in the morning. You will need at least two to three hours to explore it all!
Taste the local dishes
Malaga is also known for its unique cuisine, where seafood is the protagonist, so make sure you try one of these local dishes during your stay:
- Espetos de sardinas: grilled sardines, it is considered a healthy dish, as only salt and a tiny bit of oil are added.
- Pipirrana malagueรฑa: if seafood is not up your alley, here is a summery dish that you will love! It is a salad that consists of diced onion, cucumber, bell pepper, tomato, olive oil, and salt. But keep in mind that it can be accompanied by clams, prawns, or other seafood.
When is the best time to visit Malaga
If you are visiting Malaga mainly for its beaches, the best time to visit is at the beginning of summer or towards the end of it, as the middle of summer is very hot. In May and early June, the temperatures range around 77ยฐF to 82ยฐF (25ยฐC- 28ยฐC), which is the perfect beach weather. September is also a great month to visit, as the water will still be warm and there will be fewer people.
For those who donโt mind skipping the beach, winter (December to February) is also a great time to visit Malaga, as the temperatures range from 50ยฐF to 64ยฐF (10ยฐC to 18ยฐC), which is a perfect temperature to explore the city without crowds.

โOur experience with Daytrip was excellent. They communicated with us well and helped us feel reassured at every stage of our planning. We had a transfer from Malaga Airport directly to our accommodation in Seville (2.5 hour drive). Francisco was waiting for us in the Arrivals area holding a sign with our name on it. He was a calm and careful driver while also answering our questions and pointing out interesting things along the way. He delivered us to the exact place we asked, even though it was a complicated part of old Sevilla. Due to COVID, we were reluctant to take the trains, so we appreciate this option. We will do this more often as it made our arrival so much easier and less hectic, especially after a long over-night flight! Highly recommend.โ
Wonderful way to travel and to see the sights along the way
โWe booked a car to take us from Mรยกlaga to Sevilla. Manuel showed up right on time and with a bigger vehicle than expected. He was very polite and helpful, loaded our luggage and even opened the doors for us every time. We made a tour stop in Ronda and he knew the area very well, having been there many times. He drove us first to the bottom of the hill for a fantastic view back up to the city (obviously not something a lot of people knew about as it wasnรขโฌโขt very crowded there). He then made recommendations on things we should see in our limited time in the city. After our stop, we continued on the Sevilla. Manuel provided commentary on the areas we travelled through and played some lovely Spanish guitar music. He had water available for us in the car and answered any questions we had. The apartment we had booked in Sevilla was on a very narrow street in the middle of a maze in the old town. Manuel was able to find the location and helped us with our luggage at our destination. (Iรขโฌโขm pretty sure we would never have been able to find it on our own!) We then booked a car to take us from Sevilla to Lisbon, Portugal. Again, our driver, Serafim, showed up right on time and was able to find us at our private apartment on the twisty narrow street in the old city. He, too, was very polite and helpful and helped us with our luggage. This time we made a tour stop in Mรยฉrida. Serafim knew the area very well, having been there before. He then recommendations on things we should see in our limited time in the city and gave us the directions on how to get to the different locations. Again, after our stop, we continued on to Lisbon. Like our first trip, Serafim provided commentary on the areas we travelled through and answered any questions we had. He was even able to help us troubleshoot when our local phone stopped working after we crossed into Portugal (roaming was turned off.) The apartment we had booked in Lisbon was on a very narrow street in the middle of a maze in the old town. As Serafim is from Lisbon, he was able to find the location and helped us with our luggage at our destination. (As with our first trip, we would never have been able to find it on our own!) Though this service is more than a train or bus would cost, it is worth every penny. Great service and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an easy and comfortable way to travel between cities. Though this service is more than a train or bus would cost, it is worth every penny. Great service and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an easy and comfortable way to travel between cities.โ
โVery simple booking process for our journey from Seville to Malaga. Door to door service, big, clean and comfortable car. Convenient without the risk and stress of missing a bus/train.ย Ruben is a very careful, friendly and professional driver. He was well prepared with suggestions for the Christmas celebrations at Malaga. Would rate him beyond "Excellent". A special thank you to Ruben! Will will definitely use DayTrip for future transfers.โ
