Car trip from Bayeux to Bruges

The car trip from Bayeux to Bruges is a journey through time, where World War II and medieval villages conceal themselves in a time warp. This cruise along continental Europe's northern frontier doesn't get the same attention as its southern border. But that means there are more treasures for you to uncover!

The rustic apple orchids, salty sea air, and softly rolling hills will heighten your senses for the entire 305-mile drive into Belgium. But first, you must find a comfortable and reliable mode of transportation that allows you to explore one of Europe's most underrated regions.

Fortunately, our comprehensive guide has tips, tricks, and everything you need to know to transfer from Bayeux to Bruges in 2024!

About Bruges

Belgium's seventh-largest city is the final stop on your adventure from Bayeux to Bruges. The town sits along the Zwin River and is home to fewer than 120,000 locals. Its proximity to the North Sea and the Netherlands influenced the region's culture, heritage, and unique ways of life.

Danish Vikings founded Bruges in the 9th century, and due to its unique position between England and Scandinavia, it flourished on its vital trade route. However, trade was also the city's downfall. By the 16th century, ships were too big to fit into the small port and sought business elsewhere in northern Europe.

Miraculously, Bruges suffered little to no damage despite being occupied by Nazi Germany in World War 2. As a result, the city didn't spend millions rebuilding its historic buildings and cobbled streets in pristine condition today. In 2000, UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site, where millions come to indulge in cozy bars and mouth-watering chocolate stores in a Disney-like setting!

Climb the Belfry of Bruges

Proudly towering over downtown Bruges, the Belfry of Bruges is an iconic symbol of the city's medieval past. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers breathtaking cityscape views from its 83-meter-high tower.

You can climb the narrow staircase to the top and admire the intricate architecture while learning about the tower's history and significance. It was previously a lookout tower for observing fires and dangers. So you can already imagine its 360-degree panoramic vistas.

Visit Choco-Story

If you're traveling as a family, your kids will not allow you to overlook a visit to the Choco-Story Chocolate Factory! In the museum, you'll learn about this tasty treat's 5,500-year-old history and how it's developed since then. However, you can also get your hands dirty and experience chocolate-making firsthand by booking a workshop tour.

The only downside of visiting this museum is leaving the chocolate paradise at the end of the day!

Cruise the canal

A cruise along Bruges endless waterways is like being transported to the sought-after canals of Venice. But without the herds of tourists!

A boat tour will take you along the city's most enchanting spots in its fairytale old town. Some of the most notable landmarks to snap a picture of are our Beguinage, Saint John’s Hospital, and the Church of Our Lady. But you'll also discover picturesque houses clinging to the riverside that you can't witness while on foot.

When is the best time to visit Bruges?

Belgium offers something unique to visitors at any point of the year. But overall, late spring is the best time to visit Bruges.

Since Bruges is so popular, you want to avoid visiting in the summer if you don't want to have to fight your way through crowds and pay peak accommodation prices. Great communication with an actual person! They will take you ANYWHERE, No pre-set routes to choose from!

Last minute plan change and Daytrip was our last resort so I chatted with them and had an immediate response from a real person, best situation ever. Never used Daytrip before but the reviews were incredible so we took the chance and booked a driver at like 11-12pm and by 7am the next morning when we woke, they found us a driver and the driver had already texed us making contact! Very impressed and will definitely use them again. We went from Dubrovnik, Croatia to Tivat, Montenegro.

Perfect Transport

Andreas did a great job picking us up from Pireaus Cruise Port and taking us to our rental in Spata. The three of us had been on a long cruise and had 9 pieces of luggage. He arrived in an appropriate vehicle and loaded and unloaded all of it. We are very happy with out decision to book with Daytrip.

Exactly what they promised

We used Daytrip.com for 4 trips within Italy. This door-to-door service is not inexpensive. That said: All 4 drivers arrived on time. All spoke fluent English. All were excellent drivers, and all were kind and considerate. Lots of other things went wrong on this trip, but Daytrip.com did exactly what they promised.
