Overview: car trip from Bucharest to Brasov

Garlic, holy water, and a crucifix are essential for your journey from Bucharest to Brasov. That's because you're about to venture into the mystical region of Transylvania, the home of Dracula and vampires!

Its magical folklore is just as surreal as the vistas along the 105-mile (169 km) road trip. And you don't have to wait long after speeding by Bucharest's Parisian-style streets and the majestic Palace of Parliament for postcard scenery to unfold. The clusters of trees sandwiching the road will guide you to the foothills of the Transylvanian countryside's towering peaks.

About halfway in, the rolling hills loom over medieval villages seemingly trapped in a previous century. The further you drive, the higher the mountains soar into the clouds, each coated with a blanket of snow. The gaping valleys with clear waterways flowing to your side make the jagged terrain even more intimidating. Since the breathtaking natural wonders surround the picturesque city of Brasov, you won't know you're coming to an end until the Black Church's pointy spire pokes itself above the town.

The last thing you want on this voyage is to take the wrong turn and arrive at Dracula's lair. So, we created this extensive Bucharest to Brasov travel guide to ensure you have a smooth and thrilling journey through the heart of Romania!

About Brasov

The picture-perfect drive from Bucharest to Brasov will bring you from Romania's capital to its eighth-largest urban center. Despite its popularity among local and foreign tourists, the city nestled along the Scheiu River is home to under 240,000 residents. Its location in the southeast of Transylvania was key to its fascinating past.

Early Brasov

In 1211, Teutonic knights founded Brasov beneath the Tampa Mountain. The surrounding geography and position along trade routes between Europe and the Middle East allowed the area to flourish with cloth, weapons, and wax trading.

By the Middle Ages, Brasov had a reputation for its master craftsmen. As a result, the city built robust defense barriers to defend itself from invading tribes and armies. Due to the skilled workers here, you can still admire many towers, forts, and old city walls today.

One of Brasov's most famous events was in 1421. The Ottomans tried to conquer the city, and although they burned the town, they couldn't control the area. On their return twenty years later, citizens built a fortified wall, preventing the Empire from taking over the city like the rest of Transylvania.

Recent and modern Brasov

The 20th century was a mixed bag for Brasov. On one hand, it was the center of the nation's manufacturing industry, providing work and finances to the region. On the other hand, it witnessed one of Europe's strictest reigns under the communist party and encountered the violent Romanian Revolution towards the end of the century.

After its fall, Brasov was once again free to prosper. The old town still feels trapped in the Middle Ages with its colorful medieval buildings and rustic cobbled lanes that house cozy boutique stores. But it's also a 21st-century city with a focus on tourism. Brasov has put much effort into developing waterparks, ski resorts, and links to the famous Bran Castle for its 1.5 million international visitors.

From Bucharest to Brasov: travel tips

Learning a few insider tips can help when traveling from Bucharest to Brasov and protecting yourself from mystical creatures. Fortunately, our team of local drivers and travel experts is eager to share their secrets for a perfect road trip!

Get off the beaten path

By modern-day standards, Romania is relatively unexplored by tourists. And some of the most unheard-of yet remarkable attractions sit on the road from Bucharest to Brasov. From Peles Castle, Romania's most beautiful fortress perched upon a hill, to the jaw-dropping Salina Veche Salt Mine, almost 400 feet (122 meters) below the earth, endless attractions await you to discover!

Plan for the weather

Due to the mountainous terrain on the road from Bucharest to Brasov, the weather can change in the blink of an eye. Also, it's challenging to predict the forecast. So, consider packing waterproof clothing and umbrellas, even if it's sunshine and rainbows in Bucharest. But don't forget about sunscreen. You can still get burned during those cloudy, wet days.

Prepare for the scenery

Since Romania doesn't get the same attention as other European nations, its natural beauty often blows tourists away. So before you embark on the voyage, get set up and prepare for the vistas.

If you're traveling by public transportation, sit on the left side of the carriage and find a seat with unobstructed views. You don't want a pillar on the outskirts of your photos. But no matter how you travel, fully charge your camera, as you'll be using a lot of battery!

How to get from Bucharest to Brasov

Bus from Buchrest to Brasov

The bus is ideal for anyone traveling on a budget. Flixbus offers a cheap, no-frills service between the two cities, but you should book seats far in advance. Not many companies drive on this route, so there's a limited timetable, and tickets sell out due to the demand from backpackers.

Flixbus is the primary provider on this route, and although it's slightly cheaper than the train, there are a few cons. The seats are compact, and the legroom is small. So it's not the most comfortable of journeys. Also, you must double-check your departure point on the day of travel, as Bucharest has five bus stations in town.

  • Fastest shuttle: 3 hours, 50 minutes
  • Average duration: 4 hours, 10 minutes
  • Lowest ticket price: $5.40 (€4.99)

Things to do when you get to Brasov

Nestled in the Carpathian Mountains and seemingly inhabited by bloodsucking vampires, you're likely unaware of the thrilling attractions in town. So, we compiled the highlights so you can add them to your travel schedule after driving from Bucharest to Brasov.

Search for gems in the old town

Stepping into Brasov's Old Town is like taking a journey back in time. Cobblestone streets with multicolored buildings lead to charming squares littered with ancient landmarks.

The focal point of the Old Town is the Council Square, where you can admire the elegant Baroque architecture of the Council House and the towering Black Church. As you wander the narrow alleys, you'll encounter hidden sights like Rope Street, one of the narrowest streets in Europe, and quaint artisan shops selling handmade goods.

Venture through Bran Castle

Bran Castle is Romania's most renowned attraction. And it's only 15 minutes from Brasov! The Saxons built this structure, standing 2,500 feet (762 meters) above the ground, in the 1300s. However, it didn't gain world recognition until Charles Boner used it as his inspiration for Dracula's iconic castle in 1865.

Although you'll learn about its folklore, you'll uncover more about the region's history, battles, and a unique insight into Transylavaia's lifestyle. Of course, its position, clinging to a mountain, gives stunning views of the surrounding area.

Visit Rasnov Citadel

Rasnov Citadel doesn't get the same recognition as Bran Castle. However, its views and history are just as fascinating as those of its rivals. In fact, it's arguably more enjoyable, as you'll experience far fewer tourists here.

The good news is that you won't miss the fortress. It towers over the nearby town of Rasnov, and the distinctive Hollywood sign marks its territory. You must hike up the footpaths or take a newly constructed cable car to the top.

Climb the White Tower

The White Tower is only a stone's throw from the lively streets of Brasov's old town, yet it feels like you're transported to another world of peace, surrounded by Johann Jakob Mylius Park.

This tower is one of the oldest structures in Brasov. The Teutonic knights constructed it when they arrived during the 13th century to protect themselves from the invading tribes. Its on-site museum gives a clear insight into the past and explains how the city has changed over the centuries.

When is the best time to visit Brasov?

The best time to travel from Bucharest to Brasov largely depends on your preferences. However, there's one period that caters a bit more to every type of traveler.

Spring is a favorable time to travel due to its climate, festivities, and events. From the end of March to the end of June, the average temperature is 68° Fahrenheit (20°C) and gets increasingly warmer towards the end of the season. You can spend the entire day outdoors, drinking, eating, or participating in walking tours without feeling overpowered by the beating summer sun.

There's a range of events during spring, especially around Easter. However, the most beloved period for locals is the 125-year-old Youth of Brasov Fest. Groups of riders parade through the streets, celebrating the arrival of spring and its glorious sunshine. Friends, family, and tourists visiting from afar create a buzzing atmosphere in the outdoor bars, restaurants, and cafes.

From Bucharest to Brasov return a few days later

I would absolutely recommend Day Trip. We were picked up from our hotel in Bucharest and driven to our hotel in Brasov. Hotel to hotel has to be a lot better than the hassle of taxis trains etc. Our driver, Florin, was wonderful - very courteous and knowledgable, and patient at our scheduled stop to visit Peles Castle on the way to Brasov. We were fortunate enough to have Florin, again, on our return a few days later to the Bucharest Airport. A great service and a great driver.
