This 12th-century Cistercian abbey is one of the most photographed sites in the region, thanks to its remarkable architecture and surroundings. The buildings are crafted in an austere Romanesque style, inviting travelers to explore the church and cloister with a guided or self-guided tour. (Keep in mind that silence is requested in certain parts of the complex.) Outside, the grounds are surrounded by lavender fields, which bloom in June and July, the pale purple buds accenting the stunning grounds and forming the base of many of the monks’ infused goods, including lavender honey, liquor, and essential oils.

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie rests at the entrance to the Verdon Gorge, one of the most stunning natural wonders of the Provence region, and beyond. Be sure to see the “Star of Moustiers,” a golden star suspended between cliff faces, representing a local legend. Then, head to the Notre-Dame de Beauvoir Chapel for panoramic views. While here, sample flavors of the region, including lavender honey and local goat cheeses.

Moustiers-Ste-Marie is a charming medieval village dramatically situated between two rocky cliffs with a star suspended on a chain between them. It's known as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" and is famous for its centuries-old tradition of fine faience pottery. The village features narrow cobblestone streets, beautiful fountains, a 12th-century church, and stunning views of the surrounding landscape and nearby Sainte-Croix Lake.
Senanque Abbey is an active Cistercian monastery where monks still live and work. Visitors can tour the abbey with a guide, but hours may be limited, especially during religious observances. Photography is permitted outside but may be restricted inside. The abbey maintains a simple gift shop where you can purchase lavender products and honey made by the monks.
