Pisa, located in the Tuscan region of Italy, has more than 20 historic churches and several medieval palaces. This university town is renowned for its art and architectural treasures. Pisa has a lively street life and a vibrant cafe/bar scene. The famous Piazza dei Miracoli, or Miracles Square, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains the city’s most notorious sights. Its most famous, The Leaning Tower of Pisa, is a tilted bell tower that came to be as a result of poor construction. Today, tourists flock to the Leaning Tower for a glance at the unique structure. Feel free to climb the 300 steps to the top for a spectacular view of town. Another acclaimed monument is the Duomo Pisa, or the Pisa Cathedral. The medieval Roman Catholic cathedral, founded in 1064, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Pisa’s architectural gems. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Pisa Romanesque style, is also a notable sight worth exploring. The remarkably ornate and rich history of the city make Pisa a must-see tourist destination.

Lucca is a relatively flat city with roads open to everyone: cars, pedestrians, bicycles, and scooters alike. Although open, priority is given to pedestrians, making Lucca a walk-friendly city. Its impressive walls that surround the heart of the city are well maintained and fully intact. Despite the many years of calm that have rendered the Renaissance-era walls useless, it has now been repurposed. The entire circle is a pedestrian walkway surrounded by an outer lying stretch of green. The pedestrian promenade makes it ideal to see all of Lucca's major gems from above. Once you get back on solid ground, be sure to visit the Duomo di San Martino, the Basilica di San Frediano, and traces of the amphitheatre in Piazza dell'Anfiteatro.

Lucca stands out for its completely intact Renaissance city walls, which have been transformed into a 4.2-kilometer elevated park where locals and visitors stroll, jog, and cycle. During your 3-hour visit, explore the oval-shaped Piazza dell'Anfiteatro built within an ancient Roman amphitheater, climb the Guinigi Tower with its rooftop oak trees, and visit the striking zebra-striped San Michele Church. Unlike other Tuscan cities, Lucca remained independent for centuries, developing unique architectural styles and a distinct cultural identity still evident today.
This day trip allocates 3.5 hours for Pisa and 3 hours for Lucca, providing a balanced experience of both cities. In Pisa, focus on the Square of Miracles with its four monumental structures, including the famous Leaning Tower. In Lucca, prioritize walking a section of the walls, exploring the historic center with its towers and churches, and experiencing the city's relaxed atmosphere. Your driver will handle the approximately 30-minute journey between the cities, ensuring you maximize exploration time at both destinations.
The walls of Lucca offer a perfect elevated vantage point to appreciate both the historic center and surrounding landscapes. Rent a bicycle from vendors near the walls (approximately €3-5 per hour) to cover the full 4.2-kilometer circuit in about 40 minutes, or walk a section at a leisurely pace. The tree-lined promenade provides shade, benches, and panoramic views. Access the walls via ramps and stairs at various points around the city, with the sections near Porta San Pietro and Porta Santa Maria offering particularly good views.
Both cities offer memorable tower-climbing experiences. In Pisa, the 58-meter Leaning Tower provides unique tilted perspectives and panoramic views (reservation recommended). Lucca features several towers worth ascending, particularly the 45-meter Guinigi Tower crowned with oak trees growing from its rooftop garden, and the 50-meter Torre delle Ore (Clock Tower). Each climb involves 200+ steps but rewards with spectacular views. If you prefer to climb just one tower in each city, choose the Leaning Tower in Pisa and the Guinigi Tower in Lucca.
Pisa offers local specialties like cecina (chickpea pancake), pappa al pomodoro (bread and tomato soup), and seafood dishes reflecting its maritime history. Lucca's cuisine includes buccellato (sweet bread with raisins and aniseed), garmugia (spring vegetable soup), and tordelli lucchesi (meat-filled pasta with ragu). Both cities feature excellent gelato shops. For authentic experiences, avoid restaurants directly surrounding main attractions; your driver can recommend establishments frequented by locals where you'll find better quality and value.
Yes, and it's highly recommended. Leaning Tower tickets often sell out, especially during peak season (April-October). Purchase tickets online through the official Opera della Primaziale Pisana website, selecting a specific entry time. Children under 8 are not permitted to climb. If you prefer to decide on the day, your driver can advise on current availability, but be prepared for the possibility of lengthy waits or unavailability during busy periods. Consider purchasing a combined ticket that includes other monuments in the Square of Miracles.
Lucca offers excellent shopping opportunities, particularly for artisanal products. Via Fillungo, the main shopping street, features boutiques selling leather goods, clothing, and accessories. Look for local specialties like olive oil from the Lucca hills, buccellato (traditional sweet bread), and products made from neighbor Carrara's marble. The city is also known for its antique shops around Via del Battistero and unique boutiques within the Roman amphitheater. Unlike larger tourist centers, Lucca provides a more relaxed shopping experience with authentic local crafts.
