Portugal uses the euro (EUR). Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops throughout Lagos. However, cash is preferred for smaller beachside establishments, local markets, and traditional tavernas. ATMs are readily available throughout the town and surrounding areas.
Portugal enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers. The best time to visit Lagos is April through October when temperatures are pleasant for beach activities. Summer offers the warmest weather and longest days, while spring and fall provide comfortable temperatures with fewer crowds.
Popular destinations include Albufeira and Vilamoura, Sagres and Alvor, Portimao and Silves, and Quinta da Tor vineyard visits. Each trip showcases the Algarve's stunning coastline, historic towns, and renowned wine culture.
Lagos is very safe for visitors with low crime rates typical of Portuguese coastal towns. The area is well-developed for tourism with good infrastructure and helpful local authorities. Standard beach safety precautions and watching belongings in crowded areas are sufficient for a worry-free visit.
Pack beach essentials, including swimwear, sunscreen, and flip-flops, along with comfortable walking shoes for exploring cobblestone streets. Bring light, breathable clothing, a hat, and a light jacket for cooler evenings. Don't forget a waterproof bag for beach days and power adapters for European outlets.
Faro Airport (FAO) is the closest major airport, located about 58 miles (93 km) east of Lagos. The airport serves numerous European destinations. Lisbon Airport is another option but requires a longer drive of approximately 185 miles (300 km).
Key attractions include the stunning Ponta da Piedade cliffs with golden limestone formations, beautiful beaches like Dona Ana and Camilo, and the historic old town with its traditional Portuguese architecture. The town also offers excellent seafood restaurants and vibrant nightlife along the marina.
Portuguese is the official language. English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants in Lagos due to its popularity with international visitors. The local Algarve region has a strong tourism infrastructure with multilingual staff in most tourist-oriented businesses.
