Yes, there are several options beyond simply viewing the canal from the bridge. Boat tours through the canal offer a striking close-up perspective of the towering rock walls. Bungee jumping over the canal is also available and must be booked in advance through operators such as Zulu Bungy. The bridge itself provides excellent photo opportunities, especially when a vessel is passing through.
There are two options: climbing the famous 999 steps from the base of the fortress, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes and rewards visitors with breathtaking views, or driving to the upper entrance if you prefer a less strenuous approach. Entry costs 20 EUR. Hours are typically 8:30 to 15:30 in winter and 8:00 to 20:00 in summer, though these can vary seasonally.
The Corinth Canal is about 55 miles (88 km) west of Piraeus, roughly a 1-hour drive via the A8 motorway. From the canal, Nafplio is a further 35 miles (57 km) south into the Peloponnese, adding about 45 minutes. The full route makes for a varied and scenic day with two very different but equally rewarding stops.
Yes. Arvanitia Beach is a small but pleasant pebble beach directly below the Palamidi Fortress, accessible by a short walk from the old town. It is a popular spot for a quick swim on a warm day. The beach has basic facilities and is free to use. A slightly longer drive leads to larger, sandier beaches on the outskirts of town.
Nafplio is widely considered one of the most beautiful towns in Greece. It served as the first capital of modern Greece after independence in the 1820s. Key attractions include the Palamidi Fortress, an imposing 18th-century Venetian fortification perched above the town; Bourtzi Castle, a small island fortress accessible by boat; and a charming old town of neoclassical mansions and cobblestone alleys.
The Corinth Canal cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth, connecting the Saronic Gulf to the Gulf of Corinth and saving ships a detour of around 430 miles (700 km) around the Peloponnese. First proposed in antiquity, it was finally completed in 1893. The canal is just over 4 miles (6.3 km) long and is carved through sheer limestone walls that rise dramatically above passing vessels.
Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions for both stops, with comfortable temperatures and fewer visitors. Summer is warm and lively, though Nafplio can be busy in peak season. Winter visits are peaceful and mild by Greek standards, and most attractions remain accessible, though fortress hours may be reduced.
Nafplio has an excellent dining scene for its size. The old town is lined with tavernas and cafes serving fresh seafood, grilled meats, and classic Greek dishes. Try fresh grilled fish or the local shrimp, which is particularly good given the town's coastal setting. The harbor promenade is a pleasant place to stop for coffee or a mezze lunch.
