The Museo Nazionale Tarquiniense is housed in the 15th-century Palazzo Vitelleschi, a beautiful Renaissance building. The collection includes Etruscan sarcophagi, sculpture, jewelry, and pottery. Its most famous piece is the Winged Horses, a terracotta masterpiece from the altar at Ara della Regina, considered one of the finest surviving examples of Etruscan sculpture in the world.
Tarquinia and northern Lazio specialize in simple rustic cooking. Acquacotta is a traditional peasant bread soup with eggs, vegetables, and pecorino. Spring and fall offer the most pleasant weather for combining the open-air necropolis with the medieval town. Summer can be very hot and exposed at the necropolis, with limited shade. Winter visits are quieter and atmospheric, although hours are shorter. The museum is closed on Mondays, while the necropolis has slightly different opening times worth confirming in advance.
