Trakošćan Castle surveys a lake of its own making from a forested ridge in the Zagorje hills — a Romanticist restoration of a medieval fortress, perfectly mirrored in the still water below, that represents 19th-century aristocratic taste at its most picturesque.

Trakoscan dates back to the 13th century as a defensive fortress, but its current romantic appearance comes from a 19th-century reconstruction by the Drascovic family, one of Croatia's most powerful noble dynasties. They transformed the medieval tower into an elegant residential palace in the neo-Gothic style. The castle remained in the family until World War II, when it became a state museum.
