Know more about your day trip

The easiest and most fun way is the historic funicular, which connects the Lower Town to the Upper Town in a couple of minutes. A second funicular runs from the Upper Town up to San Vigilio, a hilltop with panoramic views across the Lombardy plains and Alps. Both are worth the ride.
Como and Bergamo are roughly 34 miles (55 km) apart, and the drive takes about 1 hour via the A4 motorway. It's a short and straightforward transfer through the Lombardy plain, making Bergamo an ideal day trip destination from Como.
Yes, Bergamo works very well for families. The funicular rides are a highlight for kids, the views from the walls are exciting, and the streets of the Upper Town are traffic-free and easy to explore at a relaxed pace. There are plenty of gelaterias and casual trattorias to keep everyone happy.
Both are worth your time. The Upper Town is the historic showpiece, but the Lower Town's Via XX Settembre is a great shopping street, and the Accademia Carrara museum is located here. If time allows, a couple of hours split between the two gives you a well-rounded picture of the city.
The Mura Veneziane (Venetian Walls) are a remarkably preserved ring of 16th-century fortifications that encircle the Upper Town. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can walk most of the perimeter, which takes around an hour and offers lovely views over the city and surrounding countryside.
The Accademia Carrara is one of Italy's most respected art museums, located in the Lower Town. Its collection spans several centuries and includes works by Raphael, Botticelli, Tiepolo, and Mantegna, among others. It's a must for art lovers and is far less crowded than comparable museums in Florence or Milan.
Bergamo has a proud culinary tradition. Don't leave without trying casoncelli (stuffed pasta with butter and sage), polenta taragna (a hearty buckwheat polenta), and salami from the local Bergamasque tradition. The pasticcerie in the Upper Town are excellent for a morning pastry and espresso.
Bergamo's Citta Alta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, enclosed by magnificent 16th-century Venetian walls. Inside, you'll find cobblestone streets, the spectacular Piazza Vecchia, the ornate Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, the Baptistery, and the Cappella Colleoni, one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in northern Italy.
