Abbey of Senanque

This medieval monastery paints a pretty picture with its austere facade and vibrant fields of lavender.

Om

The Abbey of Senanque was founded in 1148 by a group of Cistercian monks, and quickly grew - flourishing in the 13th and 14th centuries thanks to the multiple mills, granges, and estates in Provence it ran. Though damaged in the Wars of Religion, and abandoned for a large part of the 20th century, the abbey remains an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture. Today, the small community of monks tend their fragrant fields of lavender and keep honeybees, supporting themselves through the various products they make. These are available in the monastery shop, along with chocolate products from their sister abbey, the Our Lady of Peace of Castagniers. While many visitors come just to see the impressive structure and its famed fields (best viewed later in the summer), at certain times it’s possible to join a guided tour (in French) or take an unguided stroll through the abbey, to see the historic halls up close.
