Cempoala Archaeological Zone

Nestled within the palms, the former Totonac capital shows that bureaucracy can be beautiful.

About

Cempoala is Nahuatl for ‘Place of Twenty Waters’. Located in the Veracruz State, Cempoala is one of the more important Mesoamerican archaeological sites. During the Mesoamerican era, this city was the centre for tax collection and other government functions. With a population of 30,000 people at its peak, the buildings show an impressive collection of fortresses, architectural structures, pyramids and temples. Admire the murals on the sides of the Templo de la Cruz, or learn about the stone rings that are scattered throughout the vegetation. These stone rings carry an astronomical significance which brings archaeologists and astronomers back to this city again and again.
