Sitting at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, the tiny town of Harpers Ferry was cemented in American history when abolitionist John Brown led a raid to secure the United States arsenal stored here in hopes of equipping a slave revolt. While Brown was defeated by the troops commanded by Colonel Robert E. Lee, his actions caused a national commotion, and inspired the creation of this National Park. Today, you can still visit John Brown’s fort, where the famous raid on the armory happened, and stroll the picturesque streets lined with historic buildings that have been transformed into galleries and museums. While in town, follow the stone stairs in between the Civil War Museum and the African American History Museum to the short hike up to Jefferson Rock to enjoy the same view that so captivated the former president.
