Helensburgh Glow Worm Tunnel
The bright blue and green glow of the glowworms adds an eerie feel to a spooky local legend.
Om
Helensburgh Tunnel was built in the late 1800s, and operated as a railway tunnel for a short time. When it was retired, it was sealed off, and remained largely forgotten until it was excavated in the 1990s. When reopened to the world, workers found a colony of brightly glowing glowworms! It's also said a worker died during the tunnel excavation, adding an eerie atmosphere to the haunting glow. Visitors can now enter the tunnel and see these bioluminescent worms, except during mating season in order to maintain the biosphere inside the tunnel.
