La Candelaria Monastery

Established by Augustine monks in 1597, the Monasterio de La Candelaria took over 60 years to complete. Within the complex, you’ll find artwork said to have been painted by Gregorio Vásquez de Arce y Ceballos and the Figueroa brothers, other paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, and the cave where the monks originally lived. There’s also a small museum, and in one of the pleasant courtyards, an orange tree grown from seeds brought from the Holy Land in the 19th century.
