Mammoth Cave National Park
The worldâs longest cave is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a wealth of human and natural history.
Om
The Mammoth Cave National Park covers 52,830 acres of hilly Kentucky woodlands. That might sound excessive since the park was made to preserve a single cave, but beneath those hills and valleys are over 400 miles of passageways. While the sheer scale of the cave system would probably be enough to earn UNESCO recognition on its own, Mammoth Cave also has a human history dating back 5,000 years, ranging from ancient Native American burials to 19th century concerts. Today, you can explore the cave on a number of different tours, ranging from one to six hours in length. Follow a guide through well-lit passageways dripping with cave ornaments, explore dark tunnels with just paraffin lamps, or get muddy worming your way into the dark recesses.
