Established in the 1730s, the owners of Middleton Place played a major role in early American history. The son of the founder served on the First Continental Congress, and his son signed the Declaration of Independence. While it was a rice plantation, Middleton Place was primarily planned as a country residence, with extravagant gardens made to outshine the neighbors’. The house was largely destroyed in the 19th century, but underwent decades of restoration to restore it to its former splendor. Today, the sprawling 110-acre grounds span swamps and forest, and a rolling terraced green that ends in two man-made ponds on the Ashley River.On a guided or self guided tour of the House Museum and outbuildings, you’ll learn the story of all who lived and died here, and Middleton Place’s role in the larger institution of American slavery.
