Rheinstein Castle
At the south entrance of the UNESCO Upper Middle-Rhine Valley, Burg Rheinstein is face to face with its origins.
Om
Directly across the village of Assmannshausen is the epitome of 19th century Rhine Romanticism. The castle's roots date back to the late 13th century, when the archbishop of Mainz built it as a customs house, and to protect the territory from robber knights. After the 16th century, the castle fell into ruin, but received a Romantic reconstruction from Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia. After many years of constant succession, the castle is now owned by the opera singer, Hermann Hercher. The Hercher family established it as a living cultural monument. Inside are stained glass windows and mural paintings with a Renaissance fireplace and furniture. Reach the castle through a short footpath and marvel at the valley views.
