Sanctuary of Loyola

This beautiful baroque complex is centered around the medieval birthplace of Saint Ignatius, founder of the Jesuits.

In 1521, at the Battle of Pamplona, Ignatius de Loyola was struck in the leg by a cannonball and seriously injure. It’s said that the French so admired his bravery in battle that rather imprison him, they brought Ignatius back to his ancestral home in Loyola. While recuperating, he read the Life of Christ and a book on the Saints, which catalyzed his conversion. In 1539, after much study and devotion, he, alongside Saint Peter Faber and Saint Francis Xavier the Jesuit Order. In the 18th century, this beautiful basilica was erected next to Ignatius’ home. Styled like a miniature Vatican, the opulent Baroque interior is bursting with artwork and sculptures, from the floor to the ceiling, which culminate in the silver statue of St. Ignatius at the high altar. In Ignatius’ Mudejar-style family home, visitors can learn more about the Saint’s life and work.
