Schloss Philippsruhe
Heavily influenced by the French Baroque aesthetic, this handsome manor now houses a museum and modern art gallery.
Om
Built in the 18th century, and styled after Louis XIVâs Chateau Clagny, the heavy French influence on Philippsruhe's owners can also be seen in the richly decorated majolica ovens, and wrought-iron gilded entrance gate. During World War II, much of the interior decor was moved to Fulda to protect it from bombing. Unfortunately, the chateau remained untouched, while attacks on Fulda damaged the castleâs stored valuables. Then in 1984, a major fire destroyed the dome, and some of the interior, but was restored using photo-records. Today, the castle offers a unique experience, with three distinct museums - the history and treasury of the royal family, a paper screen-play museum, and a modern art gallery. The English style park behind the chateau is free to roam, and a great way to appreciate the architecture. Itâs also a popular wedding venue, so donât be surprised if you see a bride or two.
