Home to the Strickland family since the 13th century, Sizergh Castle has gradually been expanded into a romantic mansion. While the oldest part of the castle is a 14th century Solar Tower, it’s the intricate Elizabethan woodwork that steals the show. Along with having some of the country’s most ornate oak overmantels, and a unique collection of portraits, the castle’s distinctive Inlaid Chamber entices visitors up four flights of stairs to behold stunning panels inlaid with English Poplar and “Bog” Oak, and the original state bed and stained glass. For those with mobility issues, a replica of the panel is displayed on the ground floor. In the beautiful grounds surrounding the manor you’ll find quiet walking trails, colorful wildflowers, wonderful water gardens, and the National Trust’s largest limestone rock garden.
