The Tiger Cave Temple was founded in 1975 after a Vipassana monk named Jumnean Seelasettho journeyed to the cave to meditate, during which time he saw tigers roaming within. While another legend says a huge tiger used to live in the cave. Continuing with the motif, the temple’s name also comes from the tiger-paw shaped markings on the cave walls. While you won’t see any tigers at the temple, the mountainside is home to legions of bold monkeys, so keep any belongings safely stored in a backpack. The cave is famous for its strenuous 1,237 stair climb, and there’s even a competition for the fastest ascent (the current record is 10 minutes and 21 seconds). Those who endure the climb are rewarded with stupendous views of the dramatic Thai landscape, not to mention golden Buddhas and tiger statues. Please note: this is a demanding climb, and not for people with mobility issues. Be sure to have appropriate clothing, footwear, and water bottles!
