Burg Trausnitz
This hugely impressive castle belonged to the Wittelsbachs â no not a German folk group â but medieval dukes of Lower Bavaria and later the hereditary rulers of the whole state.
Om
It's a place full of halls, and the Old Knight's Hall with its ribbed vault, gives a real feel of the High Middle Ages. The Castle Chapel of St. George echoes even more vividly with medieval time. It's focal point is the charming and superbly preserved carved crucifixion group, painted with coloured stucco, in niches on the altar wall and running in a row along the gallery balustrade. The other unique treasure is the rather more irreligious 'Fool's Staircase.' Commissioned by Prince Wilhelm in the later Sixteenth Century a series of life size paintings depict comic characters from the immensely popular and influential Italian Commedia dell' Arte. The other must see is the Chamber of Art and Curiosities, packed with unusual, exotic and downright bizarre curios assembled by the Wittelsbach dukes. Apart from reflecting their standing as princely 'Renaissance men' doubtless also giving them an excuse to avoid their wives.
