Vizille

This luxurious chateau and its liberal owner played a major role in starting the French Revolution.

Om

Dominating the little town of Vizille, this stately chateau dates back to the 17th century, when it was built by the Dukes of Lesdiquieres. In 1780 Claude Perier bought the estate, and invited the disgruntled parliament of Grenoble to meet here - a forum that had been prohibited by the king. Known as the Assembly of Vizille, this progressive meeting is considered the first portion of the French Revolution, and the reason Perier and his estate made it through the turmoil unscathed. Surrounding the chateau is a 100 hectare park, which is so expansive it transitions from a wooded landscape with its own fish farm, to a meticulously maintained garden with footbridges and waterways filled with fish and swans. The chateau’s opulent interior, filled with period furnishings tells the story of the French Revolution through its collection of exceptional artwork and artefacts.
