The route climbs into the Serra de Tramuntana via Valldemossa on the Ma-10, a narrow, winding road with tight hairpin turns and sheer drop-offs framed by some of the island's best coastal views. Allow roughly 40 to 50 minutes each way. A half day covers the village center, Can Alluny, and a swim at Cala de Deia at an easy pace. Deia is a stop on the GR221, Mallorca's long-distance mountain route through the Serra de Tramuntana. Cala de Deia is a small pebble cove of striking turquoise water tucked beneath cliffs, with a couple of simple beachside restaurants for a swim break with a view. There's no easy way to drive down to the water itself: parking near the cove is limited and fills quickly, often closing off by midday. Most visitors reach it on the roughly 1 km (0.6 mile) path from the village, a steep 30 to 40 minute walk through olive groves down to the sea, with a strenuous climb back up.
English poet Robert Graves settled in Deia in 1932, and his presence helped turn a quiet farming village into a magnet for creative and famous residents, later including figures like Richard Branson and Princess Diana. That legacy still shapes the village today: art galleries, studios, and gift shops line the streets, and the atmosphere feels more like a bohemian artists' retreat than a typical Mallorcan town, giving it a distinct character you won't find elsewhere on the island.
