Los Cabos is generally considered one of Mexico's safer resort destinations for international visitors. The main tourist areas, resort corridor, and marina are well-patrolled and see relatively low crime. Standard precautions apply: stick to reputable transport, avoid isolated areas at night, and be aware of your surroundings.
The iconic Land's End Arch (El Arco) at the tip of Cabo San Lucas is a short drive away and best seen by boat tour from the marina. San Jose del Cabo's historic town center has a walkable gallery district, a 1730s Jesuit mission, and a scenic estuary. Cabo Pulmo, about an hour north along the East Cape, rewards divers and snorkelers. Todos Santos, a Pueblo Magico arts town on the Pacific coast, makes an excellent half-day road trip.
Mexico's official currency is the Mexican peso (MXN). While USD is accepted in many tourist-facing businesses, you'll generally get better value paying in pesos. Many local vendors, piers, and smaller eateries are cash-only, so it's wise to carry enough pesos, particularly since ATMs in the Bacalar area can be limited. Withdraw enough cash when you arrive or stop at an ATM in a larger town on your way.
Spanish is Mexico's official language. In the Los Cabos area, English is widely spoken in hotels, resorts, restaurants, and most businesses catering to visitors, making it easy to get around without Spanish. That said, a few basic Spanish phrases are always appreciated by locals.
Tipping is standard practice in Mexico and widely expected in the Los Cabos area. A tip of 15 to 20 percent is customary at restaurants; hotel staff, fishing guides, tour operators, and spa workers also appreciate tips. Many places accept tips in USD or MXN. When paying by card, check that the terminal is charging in pesos to avoid unfavorable foreign currency conversion rates.
Baja California Sur has a distinct culinary identity built around the sea. Look for chocolate clams (a local bivalve often served on the half shell), fresh fish and shrimp tacos, ceviche, lobster from the East Cape, and seafood tostadas. The region is known for Baja Med cuisine, a creative fusion of Mexican, Mediterranean, and Asian influences developed by local chefs. Mezcal and craft beer from Baja breweries are popular drink choices alongside fresh agua fresca.
The Los Cabos area is one of Mexico's top destinations for outdoor activities. Deep-sea sport fishing is world-renowned, particularly for marlin, dorado, and tuna. Snorkeling and diving are excellent, especially at Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park to the northeast, one of the healthiest coral reefs in North America. Kayaking, paddleboarding, whale watching tours, ATV desert excursions, and championship golf are all popular options.
Los Cabos enjoys a dry, sunny climate for most of the year. November through May is the most popular period, with warm days, low humidity, and calm seas ideal for water activities. June through October brings higher humidity and the occasional tropical storm, with September being the peak of hurricane season. Winter months also offer excellent whale watching, as gray and humpback whales migrate through the area.
