About Venice

Venice is found in northeastern Italy. It is a city steeped in historical importance and beauty. Venice draws tens of millions of visitors annually with its immersive culture and fairytale atmosphere. Since it was founded in the middle of a lagoon, it's unsurprising that its beauty primarily lies in its gorgeous canals and waterways, overlooked by towering buildings and quaint ancient homes.

Besides its lagoons and canals, Venice is also home to Renaissance buildings, churches, monasteries, monuments, and immersive art and music. Although the city peaked in the 17th century while it was the center of a maritime republic, it is still an influential European city by way of tourism alone. In fact, the city sees just as many, if not more, poets, writers, musicians, artists, history enthusiasts, and the romantic at heart now as it did back then.

As one of the world's oldest cultural and tourist centers, it is a sought-after travel destination for those interested in visiting Italy and neighboring countries. No matter where your travels take you in Venice, you'll be greeted by marbled and frescoed palaces, exquisite fine dining establishments, sparkling lagoons, romantic canals, stunning Adriatic coastlines, and magnificent bell towers, domes, and churches.

Not to mention, the city has a unique atmosphere that awakens the imagination and carves a spot in our minds. You won't be disappointed with so much to see and do in Venice, from historical church and art gallery tours to gondola rides, street markets, magnificent museums, parks, and opera house visits.

From Ljubljana to Venice: travel tips

Are you eager to hop in a car, train, bus, or flight and travel from Ljubljana to Venice? If so, you might want to consider a few of our well-researched travel tips. We did the research, so you don't have to. Have a look below.

Dress appropriately

There aren't any rules about how you should dress when traveling to Venice. But there are some once you arrive. In churches and "public spaces" you are expected to cover your shoulders and knees. And since it is one of the most stylish cities in the world, you might want to bring your A-game. So, pack a few of your nicest outfits and get ready to dress to impress.

Not only will your killer wardrobe attract the right attention in Venice but also in the many small towns and cities along the way that you decide to visit. However, be sure to keep comfort in mind as you don't want to walk around Predjama Castle, Grotta Gigante, and Miramare Castle in uncomfortable shoes.

Plan to spend two to three days in Venice

Some people drive from Ljubljana to Venice to steal a few hours in the city. But to enjoy everything Venice offers and sightseeing along the way, you must plan to spend at least two to three full days in Venice.

After all, nothing is worse than rushing your trip and missing out on a few of the world's most spectacular sights and activities because you didn't plan enough time to see and participate in them.

Book a car trip with Daytrip

There might be many ways to travel from Ljubljana in Slovenia to Venice in Italy, but do you really want to spend the trip on public transport?

Not only is public transport – like trains and buses – unreliable but they also often cannot offer you luggage handling services and door-to-door services alongside accommodating sightseeing requests. Luckily, Daytrip can, so why not consider booking a private car trip with them to get the most out of your travel experience?

How to get from Ljubljana to Venice

With Venice's enticing nature, it's no wonder you're excited to travel from Ljubljana to Venice and begin exploring. But how do you get to this illustrious city? You'll be pleased to learn that there are a few options, but as with all things, some transportation options are more convenient and cost-effective than others. Let's have a look:

From Ljubljana to Venice by bus

The idea of traveling by bus is enticing, considering the buses from Ljubljana to Venice offer the cheapest travel. However, it's by no means the best way to get from one city to the next. Unfortunately, bus travel is trick and time-consuming if you plan to travel between these two European cities.

Multiple stops are often involved, and the route changes from one bus to the next. The trip itself is time-consuming, taking an average of 3 hours and 55 minutes to 5 hours and 25 minutes, depending on the route and stops. It's also not the most comfortable, but it's worth considering if you're willing to sacrifice comfort and time for affordability.

Four different buses operate trips between these two cities. Flixbus offers trips four times a day, and TripstAir does, too. Then there's DRD Turizem, offering trips twice daily, and ATVO S.p.A. and ACTV S.p.a, providing trips every twenty minutes. However, it's important to note that these buses travel different routes, and ticket prices vary between $21 and $92.

From Ljubljana to Venice by train

If you were hoping train travel was better than bus travel, it's not. Unfortunately, traveling by train from Ljubljana to Venice is often more hassle than it is worth, especially considering an average trip length of about six and a half hours, which is longer than the bus.

On a train trip, you might get to see the beautiful passing scenery better, and the coach might be a little more comfortable, but is it worth taking the Slovenian Railways train from Ljubljana Tivoli to the Cervignano-Aquil.-Gr train station and then the Trenitalia train to the Venezia S. Lucia train station in Venice? Even though tickets aren't more than $40 for a one-way trip, we think not.

From Ljubljana to Venice by private car transfer

The distance between Ljubljana and Venice is about 149 miles (240 km), which means it will only take a professional Daytrip driver about two and a half hours to get you to Venice. This is considerably faster than the bus and the train, and there are no stopovers—other than your pre-booked sightseeing stops—and no car transfers. Convenient, right?

Besides being convenient, you won't need to pay a fortune to enjoy a relaxing trip between the two cities since prices start at 55 euros! Driving by car even beats a flight (when roundabout flights are available), and your friendly English-speaking driver will share travel insights about the attractions and landmarks you plan to see.

Things to do when you get to Venice

So you've arrived in Venice and are taken in by the spectacular sights and rich history, but what is there to do? The answer: so much. Look below to learn more about the best things to do in Venice that you absolutely cannot miss out on.

Gondola rides

Would you have even visited Venice if you hadn't enjoyed a Gondola ride through the city? Probably not. So why not pre-book a Venice gondola ride online before you get to the city so that you don't need to stand around in lines waiting for an opportunity to hitch a ride?

A gondola ride will show you Venice as few have ever seen it. From one of these flat-bottomed boats, you'll get to admire the sprawling historic charm from new angles while exploring some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the world.

You won't get to see many of these neighborhoods when exploring on foot, so enjoy an almost hour-long ride through the many Insta-worthy canals, including the Grand Canal.

Piazza San Marco

Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square) is the cultural heart of Venice. It’s overlooked by the Basilica di San Marco (St. Mark's Basilica), the Campanile di San Marco (St Mark's Campanile), and the Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace), so you’re surrounded by some of the city’s most iconic monuments!

Basilica di San Marco (St. Mark's Basilica)

St. Mark’s Basilica is exactly what you’d expect to be built by one of the wealthiest and most powerful cities in Europe. It’s filled with elaborate mosaics, ornate carvings, and intricate detailings to be discovered with every turn. Like an optical illusion, the longer you look at its statuettes, arched doorways and marble columns, the more details emerge.

Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace)

Right off St. Mark’s Square is the Palazzo Ducale, the home to Venice’s ruling Doge. The Doge’s Palace was the seat of the government and a symbol of Venice’s incredible wealth. Its interior is even more opulent, and a visit to Venice is incomplete without a tour!

Teatro La Fenice

There are many opera houses in Italy, but the Teatro La Fenice, or Theater of the Phoenix, is one of the most popular, and for good reason. Since its opening in 1792, it has survived three fires – hence the name – and has continued to entertain crowds from across the globe.

So, if you're interested in visiting an opera house with an old-world feel, decadently designed gold interiors, plush red velvet chairs, and a breathtaking stage, this is not a theater to be missed. Whether you're interested in seeing a classic Italian opera or a ballet, there is a show for everyone to enjoy.

Santa Maria della Salute

Built in 1631 to mark the end of the plague, the Santa Maria della Salute is one of the many Catholic churches in Venice worth a tour. This magnificent Roman Catholic church is free to tour and open to the public. Whether or not you walk within its walls, you'll likely see it during your trip since it has a significant presence within the city and can be seen from quite a distance.

Its white marble facade and 125 statues adorning it make it easy to see why. Besides its impressive interior, it is even more beautiful. The basilica features many famous paintings by Tintoretto and Titian, and there is an eye-grabbing sculpture known as The Queen of Heaven Expelling the Plague – which is fitting considering why the church was built.

If you have time, you can also explore the church's sacristy, dome, and art gallery. However, these places require a small fee, so keep this in mind. You'll also need to dress modestly and cover your legs and shoulders.

When is the best time to visit Venice?

July and August are the months you should try to avoid visiting Venice since it is during these months when the streets, attractions, and landmarks are most crowded (we're talking multiple cruise ships and tens of thousands of people). If you're planning a trip from Ljubljana to Venice, rather visit during April, May, or June, or September and October.

These months have plenty of perks. You won't encounter nearly as many crowds, and the temperatures are much cooler and more suitable for lazily wandering from one attraction to the next. Plus it makes it easier to meet the Venice dress code.

You'll also find accommodation cheaper and still get to do many of the popular Venice activities, like taking a gondola ride through its incredible canals.

Private Transfer Venice to Ljubljana

“We are traveling from Philadelphia PA to Venice to Slovenia and Croatia. Can’t rent a car in Italy and return to Croatia. Had to get into Slovenia to rent the car. So we used mydaytrip.com to book a private transfer. It’s like and Uber of sorts - an app to book the driver online. So easy and user friendly, and you can add sightseeing trips to it - the app recommends sights to add. We didn’t have time so did not add any but our trip was excellent. Paid by card in advance, they send confirmation and map of exactly where to meet driver. He was there exactly on time, drove us to our destination and gave us lots of useful information and recommendations along the way. Will surely use it again.”

Fantastic!

“I booked a private car trip from Venice to Ljubljana. Communication beforehand was excellent, we were sent confirmation of the drivers details (Mirko) and the car type, which made it easy to meet him on the day. Mirko was an excellent driver/host. He was friendly and willing to chat along the way, told us a lot about Slovenia and generally made the journey very comfortable and easy. Mirko even walked us to our accommodation in Ljubljana and gave us some great restaurant tips! Overall, a fantastic service, highly professional, well organised, safe and very comfortable. Highly recommended! 😁”

A smooth ride!

“I researched several different ways to get 4 people (2 of which were seniors) from Venice to Ljubljana, Slovenia, and couldn't find any simply way... by train we needed to change stations at the border; a bus (with our luggage) just seemed too tedious; and renting a car for a one-way trip across the Italian/Slovenian border just wasn't possible. I then looked into Daytrip and it seemed just too simple. The good news is... it was! For almost the same price it would have cost us to take a train, we had a private van pick us up from the very busy station in Venice and drive us to our front door step in Ljubljana. It was brilliant and I would do it again in a heartbeat! Our driver was fairly quiet, though did answer questions when we posed them. He greeted us on time (a few minutes early actually), helped with all luggage, and offered us water prior to the trip. He was obviously knowledgeable of the area and let us know that Ljubljana was his home town. I look forward to future trips to Europe when I can use this service again. If you check out the mydaytrip website, the options for routes are astounding! I wish that they had this service for traveling around the UK when we visit there! Great job guys!”

Venice-Trieste-Ljubjana-Venice

“We booked our Daytrip and got picked up at Marco Polo in Venice by Marko T. Our flight was delayed but Marko T. was waiting as we exited customs. Very nice gentleman who explained some cultural topics as we drove to Trieste. Marko dropped us off and we spent a few hours walking around the town. After getting picked up, we were off to our final stop in Ljubljana. Marko dropped us off at our hotel, a total gentleman. 3 days later on our way back to Venice we were met at our hotel by Jernej, a nice young man who took us back to met our Cruise back in Venice. Communications with daytrip were excellent and look forward to using them again on our next trip.”

Transfer from Venice to Ljubljana

“After spending a few days in Venice before the start of our tour, we (4 people) needed to get from Venice to Ljubljana, Slovenia where our tour started. Unfortunately, there was no easy way via plane, train or bus to make this relatively short trip. So, I found DayTrip and decided to try them. The drive and trip were excellent. We were dropped-off right at our Ljubljana hotel. The driver was great. To break-up the trip, we took advantage of the option to stop at a castle along the way. Also, the communication with DayTrip was top-notch. I would highly recommend.”

Ease of booking, prompt reply, helpful driver/guide

“Booking on Daytrip was a breeze. Our trip is from Venice marine port to Ljubljana airport with stop at Miramare. Our driver/guide Dragan J was very prompt in replying to our text before the trip. Before driving the car, he confirmed the itinerary and the time that we need to be at ljubljana and if we have any flights to catch up (we don't have) so he can give advise. He is very accomodating and patient in answering our queries during our trip. He gave very useful information that we were able to use during our stay in Slovenia. He stopped for some photo ops which we appreciated. He drove us past Trieste even if it is not part of the itinerary. He also taught us Slovenian sentences. Thanks a lot again. Best wishes to your company.”
