From exploring craggy caves to strolling through cobbled streets passing pastel-colored houses, Amalfi oozes Italian luxury and is a place you'll want to visit.
About Amalfi
Amalfi is a romantic, delightfully pretty coastal town nestled below sweeping cliffsides on the Amalfi Coast. It is one of Italy's oldest seaside towns, with a history that goes back to the 6th century when it fell under Byzantine rule. Yet, it wasn't until the 9th century that it became a formidable force after becoming one of the first Italian maritime republics with a significant naval power and trading hub that rivaled great cities like Genoa, Pisa, and Venice.
Unfortunately, Amalfi's power didn't last. King Roger II of Sicily annexed it in 1131, and the Pisands sacked the city in 1135 and 1137, making it less important. Luckily, centuries later, Amalfi became a haven for artists and writers who discovered its charms and made it into a popular Italian destination. Nowadays, it is known for its incredible food scene, stunning coastal scenery, tasty lemons, interesting history and culture, and historic churches and landmarks.
From Matera to Amalfi: travel tips
Driving from Matera to Amalfi is quite a distance, so it's an excellent idea to keep a few travel tips in mind. To ensure you have a smooth travel experience, you might want to remember the following tips:
Plan to spend enough time traveling
With 133 miles (214 km) between Matera and Amalfi and numerous sightseeing opportunities found between both cities in Italy, it's important to plan enough traveling time. This is especially true if you plan on using public transportation to hop on and off at different cultural and historical landmarks and attractions.
Typically, if you drive with a private car service like Daytrip, you'll experience everything the route offers, but the trip will take longer than the three hours it would if you traveled directly.
Pack proper footwear
If you've explored Matera and your next stop is Amalfi, you're likely no stranger to cobbled streets, stairs, and hills, so you already know that packing the proper footwear is a must. With the correct walking shoes, you'll have no issue exploring places like the Crypt of the Original Sin, the Pertosa Caves, or the streets of other Italian cities and towns along the way.
Sightsee the little-known spots
Everyone wants to see the big attractions when traveling from Matera to Amalfi, and we don't blame them, but why not explore a few of the little-known hidden gems? From hidden coastal paths to Tramoniti, an inland village, and pastel-painted homes in Positano to the magnificent "Path of the Lemons" and the cascading town of Minora, there's much to see and do.
How to get from Matera to Amalfi
Once you've decided to travel from Matera to Amalfi, you might wonder what transportation options are available. Unfortunately, there aren't many options since you're traveling from one relatively small city to another, but you can take a train bus or book a private car service like Daytrip. Let's discuss these options below:
From Matera to Amalfi by bus
When traveling from Matera to Amalfi by bus, you can take a bus during the day or evening. The day buses usually drive from Matera to Salerno and then from Salerno to Atrano in Maiori. Once in Maiori, you'll need to walk 2 miles (3.4 km) to Amalfi or take a taxi the rest of the way. The 5120 bus offers trips twice daily between these cities. The trip takes about 6 hours, and ticket prices start at $20 (âŹ18).
In contrast, the night busâMarinoBus 320âleaves once daily from Matera to Amalfi. The trip takes about eight and a half hours, and ticket prices begin at $39 (âŹ36). Since the bus stops in Salerno and Maiori, you will also encounter transfers.
From Matera to Amalfi by train
Unfortunately, there is no direct train from Matera to Amalfi. If you want to take the train, you must take a bus from Materan to Ferrandina and then a train from this town to Salerno. Only four train trips are offered from Ferrandina to Salerno daily, so you must ensure you book on time. You will also need to travel from Salerno to Amalfi via taxi.
This entire trip can be exasperating, with you needing to go from the bus to the train and the train to a taxi, but the train is usually quicker than the bus, with an average trip taking about four hours and 45 minutes. However, the bus is far cheaper, with the train route costing as much as $122 (âŹ112).
From Matera to Amalfi by private transfer car service
Of course, you can rent a vehicle if you're planning a trip from Matera to Amalfi, but the best way to travel is to book with a private car service like Daytrip. When you book with Daytrip, you'll get to choose when and how you travel and have full control over your sightseeing destinations.
You'll also get to sit back and relax while your professional English-speaking driver navigates the winding and sometimes hazardous roads between Matera and Amalfi. While they give you tips about the places you want to visit, you can sip some bottled water and take in the scenery. Prices start at $74 (âŹ68), so get a booking!
Things to do when you get to Amalfi
Amalfi might not be the biggest city in Italy by any stretch of the imagination, but this doesn't mean you'll have limited options when it comes to exploring the coastal town. So, if you're planning to drive from Matera to Amalfi and want to learn what you can get up to, have a look below:
Beach hop
It would be remiss of you to visit Amalfi without spending a few hours at one of the gorgeous beaches the region is known for among globetrotters. So put on your swimsuit and sunscreen and hit the beaches, but just keep in mind that some of them might cost you money when you visit. So, if you don't want to pay for access to VIP clubs and overpriced lounge chairs, navigate budget-friendly beach options when visiting Amalfi.
Tour the Paper Museum
Few people realize that Amalfi was one of Europe's most important paper producers for centuries, utilizing water-powered paper mills that lined the stunning river that meandered through the town's center.
Those who want to learn more about how Amalfi played an integral role in the paper industry in years past should visit the Paper Museum. A tour of this unique museum will teach you more about how the ingenious water-powered mills functioned and the history of paper production in the region. Best of all, the museum is found in a functioning historic mill, giving you a firsthand glimpse into paper history!
Path of the Gods
Hiking might not be everyone's idea of fun, but if it's yours, you'll want to allocate time in your itinerary for a walk on the Path of the Gods, which skirts the peaks of the Amalfi Coast. A meander up this hiking trail will give you a breathtaking bird' s-eye view of the Mediterranean Sea found far below. Not to mention, sweeping panoramas of the surrounding area are the perfect backdrop for photos.
When is the best time to visit Amalfi?
Since Amalfi is bigger than other Italian coastal towns like Positano, it's a year-round travel destination. However, when is the best time to visit Amalfi? If you're driving from Matera to Amalfi, we recommend visiting during the spring or fall.
Spring and fall welcome cooler weather that is still pleasant without being swelteringly hot (temperatures around 72°F/22°C). These seasons also have minimal rainy days, so you don't need to worry as much about being caught in a downpour as you flit from one attraction to the next, making memories in this spectacular Italian slice of heaven.
Your budget will also thank you if you visit during spring or fall since accommodation pricing tends to be cheaper than in peak season. But if you want a different Italian experience, consider visiting during winter when the town is lit up with beautiful evening lighting and delicious holiday street food.

Fantastisk chaufför i Egypten
