Overview: a car trip from Zurich to Basel

Switzerland is unquestionably Europe's most picturesque nation. Idyllic towns wedged between sheer valleys and lush farmyards sit in the foreground of snow-capped peaks. A car trip from Zurich to Basel showcases its jaw-dropping natural wonders and explains why this landlocked nation welcomes almost 12 million annual visitors.

Lake Zurich is the starting point of this 53-mile (85-km) road trip, where you can soak up one last postcard view of its glimmering waters before heading into nature. Everything about the drive is smooth and relaxing. The A3 highway gliding over the fertile meadows, traditional Swiss towns lining the foothills of softly rolling hills, and unspoiled air flowing through your car window feels like a lung cleanser.

The more you drive, the higher the mounds begin to climb and the thicker the alpine woodlands become. The route starts to loop around the hilly terrain, guiding you to the final leg of your journey, where the German, French, and Swiss borders meet. You'll know it's time to depart when you see the pale bricks of Grossmunster Cathedral standing above the city's colorful Romanesque buildings.

Style and comfort are the only ways to embark on this postcard-like land cruise. To uncover which travel method is best, discover our comprehensive Zurich to Basel travel guide with insider tips and tricks below!

About Basel

After departing your scenic Zurich to Basel transfer, you'll arrive in Switzerland's third-most populous city. Around 175,000 inhabitants reside here along the banks of the famous Rhine River.

You may already know that Zurich is in Switzerland, and the Basel-Stadt region is in the nation's northeast. However, you may be surprised to hear that the city straddles the borders with France and Germany.

Early Basel

Although settlers have lived around Basel since the Neolithic period, the Celtic Rauraci tribe first established a town. In the 1st century BC, they fortified the settlement at the site of Cathedral Hill today. By 374 AD, Augusta Raurica established the Roman city of Basilia, flourishing as a military and trading post.

Religion was the key to Basel's success in the Middle Ages. In the 8th century, the city became a bishopric seat, leading to the construction of Basel Cathedral. The Rennasisse also brought much financial wealth due to the completion of its university, focusing on humanism, a significant field of study during this period.

Recent and modern Basel

In the 19th century, Basel became the epicenter of pharmaceuticals. The industry created many jobs, welcomed biotech start-ups, and built robust infrastructure, injecting the city with significant cash flow. Since Switzerland remained neutral during World War II, Basel continued its focus on the field and didn't endure damage from Nazi Germany's crusade through Europe.

Today, people recognize Basel for its pristine streets, safe urban center, and high standard of living. It's a refined city that oozes class from its rich museum scene and delectable food scene, which houses five Michelin-starred restaurants.

Although the old town's cobbled lanes and historical buildings seem stuck in the past, the city has a futuristic mindset. Locals and officials adhere to green initiatives like promoting cycling, preserving green spaces, and encouraging the use of electric cars.

From Zurich to Basel: travel tips

Not many people can claim to travel on one of Europe's best road trips, from Zurich to Basel. If you are, seize the opportunity and utilize our insider tips from local drivers and experts!

Take the scenic route

The most direct route from Zurich to Basel along the A3 highway has stunning scenery. However, the backroads twisting along crystal-clear rivers are like something only out of a fairytale picture book.

Also, pack a light bag with your camera for easy access, snacks so your sugar levels don't fade, and comfortable shoes to explore.

Venture into rural Switzerland

Although Switzerland has gorgeous cities such as Zurich, Basel, and Bern, it's most famed for its majestic natural beauty. Hidden away in nature, you can find historical relics trapped in the past, such as the charming Hallwyl Castle and Augusta Raurica, the oldest Roman settlement nationwide.

Double-check that your mode of transportation stops at these sights en route!

Study the passes

Do some research before handing over your hard-earned cash if you're traveling by train. A single ticket is the best option if you're ending your European road trip in Basel. But if you plan to travel more of Switzerland by public transport, it's worth looking into the Swiss Travel Pass.

Switzerland is the fifth most expensive European country for trains. So you could save some notable cash by checking the schedule and researching the best ticket option before you depart Zurich.

Things to do when you get to Basel

Switzerland's third city receives only 105,000 overnight stays annually. But that doesn't mean there's not an abundance of things to see and do after your thrilling Zurich to Basel transfer!

Wander the Kunstmuseum Basel

The Kunstmuseum Basel is an oasis for art enthusiasts. It's the oldest public art collection in the world and houses an extensive array of works from the Middle Ages to contemporary art.

The museum's collection includes masterpieces by artists such as Hans Holbein, Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso, and Warhol. Its modern extension allows the setting to display its impressive collection and host temporary exhibitions.

Venture out to Merian Gardens

Despite being in the hustle and bustle of Basel, you're still only a stone's throw from Switzerland's iconic nature. Merian Gardens, the home of the botanical gardens, is less than 2.5 miles from downtown. You can hop on a tram for 15 minutes. Or you can stretch your legs and arrive here in under an hour.

Neatly stacked flowers bring the backdrop to life, especially in the spring when they explode into vibrant shades. You're free to walk the country-esque lanes and smell the fresh aromas of nature as you get lost in arguably Basel's most beautiful park. Its enchanting surroundings mean it's the most popular spot in town for wedding photos!

Cross the Three Countries Bridge

Believe it or not, you can check Switzerland, France, and Germany off your travel bucket list by crossing the Three Countries Bridge. This sprawling bridge spans almost 820 feet across the Rhine River, offering views of the three nations as you look south down the waterway.

Even if you've visited France and Germany before, it's worth checking out this exquisite piece of engineering. And the best part is that it won't cost you a penny!

Cruise along the Rhine

The best way to kick back in the vacation spirit and admire Basel's city charm is on a cruise along the Rhine. Most last an hour and provide views of landmarks such as the Roche Tower and the medieval bridges.

Some cruises offer commentary on the history and significance of the sights along the way. If you're traveling with that special someone, opt for a romantic dinner cruise, which combines scenic views with exquisite Swiss cuisine!

When is the best time to visit Basel?

Due to the outdoor attractions and picture-perfect urban gardens, the warmer months are the best time to travel from Zurich to Basel. Tourism is at its peak in July and August, and the beating sunshine can feel overwhelming. So, the shoulder months from April to early June and mid-September to October are more favorable, with temperatures around 70°F (21°C).

The weather is pleasant enough to spend the day outside and join in walking tours, and in the evening, you can still enjoy the Swiss cuisine al fresco style. You'll also save yourself a significant lump of cash during this period. Switzerland is expensive, but hotels, restaurants, and tours offer discounts to attract customers outside the peak months.

Finally, you'll travel more sustainably by visiting during the shoulder season. Streets and public transport won't be bombarded with groups interfering with local lives. Also, you can help businesses become less reliant on the busy months from the end of June to early September!
