The islet of Sveti Stefan is a private luxury resort (Aman Sveti Stefan) and is not open to the general public. Visitors without a reservation can admire it from the viewpoint on the hill road or from the public beach areas on either side of the causeway. The surrounding beaches are freely accessible and offer beautiful views of the islet.
Bar to Budva is approximately 22 miles (35 km) and takes about 30 minutes by car along the Adriatic coastal highway. It is a straightforward and scenic drive northward along Montenegro's coastline, making Budva one of the most accessible day trip destinations from Bar.
Yes, Mogren Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches near Budva and is quieter than the main town beaches. It is reached via a scenic 10 to 15-minute cliffside walk from Stari Grad. The water is calm and clear, ideal for swimming. With 2 hours in Budva on this itinerary, a quick visit to Mogren is very much doable if you pace your Old Town exploration well.
The walled Old Town (Stari Grad) is the heart of Budva. Key highlights include the Citadel, which offers sweeping views over the Adriatic; the Cathedral of Saint John (Sveti Ivan); and the Church of Santa Maria in Punta, one of the oldest in the city. The narrow stone lanes are full of small restaurants, galleries, and local shops worth exploring.
Montenegro uses the euro (EUR). Most restaurants, shops, and attraction entry points in Budva accept credit and debit cards. It is still useful to carry some cash, particularly for smaller purchases, beach vendors, or independently booked boat trips from the harbor, which are often cash-only or prefer it.
Budva and the surrounding Riviera are known for excellent Adriatic seafood. Grilled fresh fish, black risotto (made with squid ink), and grilled octopus are local staples. Seafood restaurants line the marina and the streets just outside Stari Grad. For a lighter option, fresh bakery items and burek (savory, filled pastry) are widely available throughout the area.
The Sveti Stefan viewpoint is a roadside stopping point on the main coastal road between Budva and Petrovac, about 15 minutes south of Budva. It sits on a hillside above the islet and offers the classic elevated photograph looking down over the orange-roofed medieval village and the turquoise waters on either side. It is the best publicly accessible vantage point for the islet.
Late spring and early autumn offer the best balance of warm weather, swimmable sea, and manageable visitor numbers. May, June, and September are particularly good months. July and August are very busy and very hot, especially in Budva's Old Town, though the beaches and coastal scenery remain beautiful throughout the summer season.
