Malaysia has a tropical climate with warm weather year-round. The best time is during the dry season from May to September when rainfall is minimal. However, the country is visitable throughout the year, with temperatures consistently around 80-90°F (27-32°C). Avoid the monsoon season from October to March for outdoor activities.
Malaysia uses the Malaysian ringgit (MYR). Credit cards are widely accepted in shopping malls, hotels, and restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. However, cash is preferred for street food, local markets, and smaller establishments. ATMs are readily available throughout the city for easy currency exchange.
Bahasa Malaysia (Malay) is the official language, but English is widely spoken and understood, especially in Kuala Lumpur's business and tourist areas. Chinese dialects and Tamil are also commonly spoken due to Malaysia's multicultural population, making communication relatively easy for international visitors.
Notable religious sites include the iconic Batu Caves Hindu temple complex, Sultan Abdul Samad Mosque, and Thean Hou Temple. The city's multicultural nature means Buddhist temples, Hindu shrines, and Islamic mosques coexist peacefully, offering visitors insights into Malaysia's diverse religious heritage.
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing for the tropical climate, comfortable walking shoes, and an umbrella or rain jacket for sudden downpours. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and modest clothing for visiting religious sites. Power adapters for UK-style outlets (Type G) are essential for electronic devices.
Kuala Lumpur is generally safe for visitors with standard urban precautions. Petty crime like pickpocketing can occur in crowded areas and on public transport. The city center and tourist areas are well-patrolled. Avoid displaying expensive items openly and be cautious in less crowded areas after dark.
Popular destinations include Batu Caves, Bukit Broga Hill, Genting Highlands, Malacca historic city, and Tempurung Cave, and Putra Mosque. Each offers unique experiences from limestone caves to highland resorts and UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is located about 28 miles (45 km) south of the city center. A secondary airport, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang), serves domestic and some regional flights, mainly for budget carriers.
