After ascending to Mount Olympus, you’ll have the freedom to hike around to scenic viewpoints and monasteries before descending to Omodos, where you can sample local wines and stroll the village streets, all at your leisure.
The Troodos Mountains are certainly one of the natural treasures of Cyprus, covered with pine forests, wildflowers, and scenic hiking trails. Many of the range’s sights are named after Greek gods, such as Mount Olympus, which is Cyprus' highest point at over 6,000 feet. To experience the beauty of these mountains, one sure way is to hike on the Artemis Trail that runs around Mount Olympus. Named after the goddess of the wilderness, the trail stretches for a bit over 4 miles. Starting from the parking lot, the route is marked and runs through a pine forest and a precipice, and offers panoramic views of almost every area of Cyprus. A few tips: the hike is relatively easy although it is recommended to bring comfortable hiking boots. Bring water, snacks, and sunscreen. Most importantly, take advantage of every viewpoint on the route!

Like many of the other villages in the Troodos mountains, Omodos is a picturesque jumble of historic houses built around a monastery. But at Omodos, residents have turned their traditions into an attraction. Wandering its cobbled streets, you’ll find countless shops and wineries offering the famous local wine (many with free samples), arkatena bread, pretzels, and other snacks, while other vendors showcase intricate narrow-knit lace, jewelry and handicrafts. If you need something more substantial, there’s a wealth of tavernas to choose from where you can take in the atmosphere and a traditional meal. If the glut of goods has you feeling repentant, head to the 18th century Timios Stavros Monastery. Inside you’ll find a wealth of art and artifacts including a piece of the true cross, the rope used to tie Jesus to the cross, relics from multiple saints, as well as a Museum of Byzantine art, Museum of national struggle for the liberation of Cyprus, and a Museum of narrow-knit lace.
