Shkoder to Cetinje is about 62 miles (100 km) and takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by car. The route crosses from Albania into Montenegro and winds up into the mountains, passing through striking highland scenery before reaching the old Montenegrin capital. The town center is mostly flat and walkable, which is a plus. However, some museum buildings have stairs and older thresholds, and the cobblestone streets near the monastery can be uneven. Cetinje Monastery is the most important Orthodox religious site in Montenegro, founded in 1484 and rebuilt multiple times. Cetinje sits at an elevation of around 670 meters (2,200 feet) in the mountains, making it noticeably cooler than the coast. Summers are warm and pleasant, while winters can be cold with snowfall. Cetinje's most celebrated local products come from the nearby Njeguski village on the slopes of Mount Lovcen. Njeguski prsut (air-dried cured pork) and Njeguski sir (aged hard cheese) are considered the finest examples of their kind in Montenegro and are served at most local restaurants. Pair them with local red wine for a classic Montenegrin meal.
Cetinje was the royal capital of the Kingdom of Montenegro and remains a fascinating open-air record of the country's history. The town is small but rich in landmarks: the Cetinje Monastery, former royal palaces turned into museums, and a main boulevard lined with 19th-century embassy buildings from a time when European powers maintained missions here.
