Mdina is approximately 8 miles (13 km) from Valletta, a drive of around 15 to 20 minutes. Dingli Cliffs are a few miles further west, adding only a short detour. Both destinations are easily reached in under 30 minutes from the capital, making this one of Malta's most convenient and rewarding day excursions for visitors based in Valletta.
Dingli Cliffs offer wide open space and fresh air that children generally enjoy, though young children should be supervised closely near the cliff edges, as there are no barriers along much of the path. The flat clifftop terrain is easy for walking and strolling. Mdina's compact, car-free streets are also manageable for families. Pack sun protection and snacks, as facilities along the cliff are limited.
Yes, Mdina served as the filming location for King's Landing in the first season of Game of Thrones, and the city's dramatic gates and baroque architecture were featured in several memorable scenes. Pjazza Mesquita in particular appears in the series. Even for visitors unfamiliar with the show, the medieval streetscapes and striking fortifications make Mdina feel like stepping directly into a historical drama.
Dingli Cliffs are the highest point in Malta, rising around 820 feet (250 meters) above the Mediterranean. The clifftop offers sweeping panoramic views that on clear days extend all the way to the Sicilian coast. Walking paths run along the cliff edge past terraced farmland, rural chapels, and ancient cart ruts. The area is peaceful and relatively uncrowded, offering a natural counterpoint to Mdina's architectural grandeur.
Mdina is a great place to try Maltese classics. Look for Stuffat tal-Fenek, the beloved rabbit stew that is considered the national dish, and Pastizzi, flaky pastry parcels filled with either ricotta or peas. A visit to one of the atmospheric cafes inside the city walls is a memorable experience, particularly those with terrace seating overlooking the countryside below. Nougat made with honey and almonds is also a popular local sweet.
Early morning is the most rewarding time to visit Mdina. Before the day-trip crowds arrive, the city's lanes are almost completely empty, and the light is ideal for photography. The main sites, including Mdina Gate and St Paul's Cathedral, are best appreciated in the cool of the morning. Sunset from the bastions looking out over Malta's central plains is also spectacular, so a late afternoon visit has its own appeal.
Mdina earned its nickname the Silent City because of its remarkably peaceful atmosphere. The fortified hilltop town has a permanent population of fewer than 300 residents, and private vehicles are restricted within its walls. The absence of traffic, the narrow medieval lanes, and the general sense of stillness that settles over the city, especially in the early morning or evening, create an experience unlike anywhere else in Malta.
