Interactive exhibits and artifact collection in the comprehensive visitor's center
Tickets can be purchased on-site at the visitor center, but booking in advance online is recommended, especially during busy summer months when queues can form. The site is managed by Heritage Malta and tickets can be purchased at heritagemalta.mt. The park opens daily at 9:00 a.m. with the last admission at 4:30 p.m. The visitor center features informative exhibits and artifacts that provide excellent context before entering the temples.
Hagar Qim is approximately 9 miles (14 km) from Valletta on Malta's southern coast, around a 25-minute drive. St Peter's Pool is nearby in the Marsaxlokk area, roughly 7 miles (11 km) from Valletta. Together, both stops sit along Malta's scenic southern coast and make for a well-rounded half-day trip from the capital.
The Hagar Qim and Mnajdra temple complex dates back approximately 5,500 years, making it one of the oldest free-standing structures in the world, predating both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. The temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remain remarkably intact, with massive limestone blocks, intricate carvings, and astronomical alignments that reveal a sophisticated ancient civilization. They are widely regarded as among the most important prehistoric sites in Europe.
The archaeological site itself involves walking on uneven gravel paths and some inclines, which can be challenging for wheelchairs or those with limited mobility. The visitor center and the area around the protective shelter covering the main temples are more accessible. Heritage Malta provides up-to-date accessibility information at their official site. St Peter's Pool requires scrambling over rocks and is not wheelchair accessible.
St Peter's Pool is a natural limestone swimming area on Malta's southeastern coast near Marsaxlokk. Crystal-clear turquoise water fills a sheltered rocky inlet, creating one of the island's most popular natural bathing spots. The natural rock formations serve as sunbathing platforms and jumping ledges, and the water is ideal for snorkeling. It is free to access and very popular in summer, so visiting in the morning is advisable to secure a good spot.
Both Hagar Qim and Mnajdra are part of the same UNESCO World Heritage site but are distinct temples about 500 meters apart. Hagar Qim is the larger complex, notable for its massive limestone blocks and elaborate carvings. Mnajdra sits closer to the clifftop and is particularly celebrated for its astronomical precision, with its doorways aligned to mark the summer and winter solstices and the spring and autumn equinoxes. Both are included in the same admission ticket.
Bring sun protection, plenty of water, and a towel, as shade at St Peter's Pool is minimal. The site has no formal facilities, so carry everything you need including snacks. Water shoes are helpful for navigating the rocky approach to the water. If you plan to snorkel, bringing your own gear is recommended as there is no rental equipment on-site. A hat and sunglasses are essential during summer months.
