The Algarve hosts lively summer festivals and local saints' day celebrations throughout the region. Almancil itself celebrates the Festa de Sao Lourenco in August. The wider Algarve also hosts food and wine festivals, cultural events, and golf tournaments throughout the year that attract both locals and international visitors.
Almancil is about 13 kilometers (8 miles) from Faro and easy to reach. By car the drive takes around 15 minutes. A direct train from Faro station reaches Almancil in about 12 minutes and runs several times daily. Local VAMUS buses also connect Faro to Almancil regularly.
Almancil town center is relatively flat and manageable, though some streets and pavements are uneven. The wider Algarve area is best explored by car or private transfer, as attractions and beaches are spread out and distances between them make walking impractical for most visitors.
Tipping is not required in Portugal, but it is appreciated. Leaving around 10% at restaurants for good service is common practice. For taxis and other services, rounding up the bill is a friendly and customary gesture throughout the Algarve.
The Igreja de Sao Lourenco de Matos is a must-visit for its extraordinary blue-and-white azulejo tile panels depicting the life of St. Lawrence. The nearby beaches of Quinta do Lago and Garraowhich are among the Algarve's finest. The Ria Formosa Natural Park, a stunning coastal lagoon, is also easily accessible from Almancil.
Portugal uses the euro (EUR). Cards are widely accepted in most restaurants, shops, and hotels around Almancil and the broader Algarve region, though it is always handy to carry some cash for smaller local establishments and markets.
The Algarve is known for its fresh seafood. Try grilled sea bream or bass, cataplana (a seafood and pork stew cooked in a traditional copper pot), and percebes (barnacles). Local pastries such as Dom Rodrigos and figos cheios (stuffed almond figs) are beloved regional sweets worth seeking out.
Late spring through early fall (May to October) offers warm to hot weather, long sunny days, and ideal beach conditions. June through August can be very hot and busy. For a quieter, more comfortable experience, May, June, and September are excellent choices with warm weather and fewer crowds.
