The closest airports are Bolzano (about 90 minutes away), Venice (about 2.5 hours), and Innsbruck in Austria (about 2 hours). The nearest train station is in Brunico, about 30 kilometers from Alta Badia, with regular bus connections. Driving is the most flexible option, as the villages sit along scenic mountain roads.
Alta Badia is a great family destination. In winter, there are beginner ski areas and ski schools in all the main villages. In summer, many of the hiking trails are gentle enough for children. The six interconnected villages are easy to reach by road, and the region has a good network of cable cars and chairlifts to help families access the mountains.
In winter, skiing the Sellaronda circuit and the Gran Risa World Cup slope are highlights. In summer, hiking the Cinque Torri loop with its WWI history, cycling through the meadows, and watching the alpenglow phenomenon known as Enrosadira are unforgettable. The Puez-Odle Nature Park is ideal for nature lovers in any season.
Italy uses the euro (EUR). Cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and ski facilities in Alta Badia. That said, some mountain huts and smaller shops prefer cash, so it's a good idea to carry some euros during your stay, especially if you plan to explore the more remote trails and rifugios.
Enrosadira is a Ladin word that describes the magical pink and red glow that lights up the Dolomite peaks at sunrise and sunset. The limestone rock faces reflect the light in vivid shades of crimson, coral, and violet. It's one of the most celebrated natural spectacles in the Alps and a reason many visitors plan their days around being outdoors at dusk.
Alta Badia has three official languages: Ladin, German, and Italian. Ladin is the ancient local language spoken by the indigenous valley community. In practice, English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and ski areas, so international visitors will have no trouble communicating throughout the region.
Ladin cuisine is hearty and unique. Must-try dishes include Casunziei (beetroot-filled pasta), Schlutzkrapfen (spinach and ricotta dumplings), Grostl (pan-fried potatoes and beef), and Strauben (fried dough pastry). Many mountain huts serve traditional recipes that reflect the region's distinct blend of Italian, Austrian, and Ladin culinary traditions.
Alta Badia is a year-round destination. Ski season runs from December through late March. For hiking, June through September is ideal, with June and September being the quieter shoulder months. July and August bring the most visitors. Alta Badia averages about 300 sunny days a year, making any season rewarding.
