Bergen Airport Flesland is about 18 kilometers from the city center. The Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen) runs every 12 minutes and reaches the city center in about 45 minutes. The Airport Express Bus (Flybussen) takes 20 to 30 minutes and is faster. Daytrip is available outside the terminal and takes roughly 20 minutes while also being door-to-door.
The city center of Bergen is reasonably accessible. The Bybanen light rail and the Floibanen funicular have accessible options. Bryggen's historic wooden walkways can be uneven, and some cobblestone streets may be tricky for strollers or wheelchairs. The waterfront and main pedestrian areas, however, are generally navigable with some planning.
Norway uses the Norwegian krone (NOK). The country is largely cashless, and credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, including taxis, buses, and small cafes. Tipping is not mandatory in Norway, as service charges are included in prices, but rounding up the bill or leaving 5 to 10% for great service is appreciated.
Summer (June to August) is the most popular time, offering the longest days, mildest weather, and access to hiking and fjord cruises. Late spring and early autumn are also rewarding, with fewer crowds and beautiful scenery. Winter brings dramatic landscapes, cozy atmosphere, and the possibility of seeing the northern lights further north, though Bergen itself is rainy and cool in winter.
Bergen is one of the rainiest cities in Europe, so a waterproof jacket is essential year-round. Summers are mild (around 15 to 20C), while winters are cold and wet. Layering is the key, and sturdy walking shoes are recommended for exploring the city and surrounding trails. Even in summer, evenings can be cool.
Norwegian is the official language of Norway. English is widely spoken across the country, from Oslo to Bergen and beyond, as Norwegians learn English from an early age. Visitors will encounter virtually no language barriers in hotels, restaurants, or when asking for directions.
Bergen is the gateway to Norway's famous fjords. Top sights include the colorful Bryggen Wharf (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Floibanen funicular for panoramic city views, the Bergenhus Fortress, and the KODE art museums. From Bergen, you can easily take day trips to the Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord, or along the Norway in a Nutshell scenic railway route.
Bergen is renowned for its fresh seafood. Try klippfisk (salt-dried cod), fish soup, and freshly cooked shrimp from the harbor. The indoor Fish Market (Fisketorget) is an excellent place to sample local favorites at fair prices. Bergen also has a strong coffee culture, and a warm vafler (waffle) with sour cream and jam is a beloved local treat.
