Bonn is considered one of Germany's safer cities, with a low crime rate and a welcoming atmosphere. As with any city, visitors should exercise standard precautions: watch for pickpockets in busy areas, particularly at the main train station and markets, and secure personal belongings. The city center is well-lit and active in the evenings.
Bonn's old town and main sights are very walkable, with most attractions concentrated in a manageable area near the pedestrianized shopping zone and the Rhine waterfront. The city is also well served by trams and buses. Strollers and wheelchairs are generally well accommodated on the main city streets, and the Museumsmeile has accessible paths along the Rhine promenade.
Cologne is just 17 miles north and easily reached in under 30 minutes by train, offering the iconic Gothic cathedral and vibrant city life. The Siebengebirge (Seven Hills) nature park, about 10 miles southeast, is great for hiking with river views. Remagen and the Rhine Valley offer scenic drives and historic sites along one of Europe's great waterways.
Germany uses the euro (EUR). ATMs are widely available throughout Bonn, and credit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and larger shops. Some smaller cafes, bakeries, and market vendors still prefer cash, so it is practical to carry a modest amount of euros during your visit.
Bonn is best known as the birthplace of composer Ludwig van Beethoven. The Beethoven-Haus museum, located in his birth home, is the city's top cultural landmark. Bonn also served as West Germany's capital from 1949 to 1990, and its Museumsmeile (Museum Mile) includes several excellent museums covering art, history, and science along a two-mile stretch of the Rhine.
German is the official language of Germany. In Bonn, English is widely understood, particularly in the city center, university areas, museums, and the tourism district. Hotel staff, museum personnel, and many restaurant workers communicate comfortably in English. Learning a few basic German phrases is appreciated but not necessary for a comfortable visit.
Bonn's dining scene reflects both its Rhineland roots and its cosmopolitan university population. Local specialties include Halber Hahn (a rye roll with aged cheese), Himmel und Aed (black pudding with apple and mashed potato), and Sauerbraten. The Marktplatz area and the Altstadt have a good mix of traditional German restaurants, beer gardens, and international cuisine.
Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are ideal, offering mild temperatures and beautiful riverside scenery without the peak summer crowds. June and July bring the Beethovenfest, a major classical music festival. The Christmas market in late November and December draws visitors from across the region. Summers can be warm and lively but busy.
