The village center and lakeside promenade are relatively compact and flat, making them easy to explore on foot. Some paths leading to higher viewpoints and waterfalls involve uneven terrain and steps. Visitors with wheelchairs or strollers will find the main village and waterfront accessible but should check ahead for specific trails.
Tipping is not obligatory in Switzerland, as service charges are generally included in restaurant prices. Rounding up the bill or leaving a small amount for particularly good service is a polite gesture. In hotels, tipping porters or housekeeping staff a few francs is appreciated but not expected.
Key highlights include a ride on the historic steam cog railway to Rothorn summit, a boat cruise on the brilliantly turquoise Lake Brienz, and a visit to the Giessbach Falls. The Ballenberg open-air museum, just outside the village, features over 100 traditional Swiss farmhouses and is one of the best of its kind in Europe.
Switzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF). While euros are accepted in some places, the exchange rate offered is typically unfavorable, so paying in Swiss francs is recommended. Credit cards are widely accepted, but smaller restaurants and shops in Brienz may be cash-only, so it is worth carrying some francs.
Brienz has been a center of woodcarving craftsmanship since the 19th century. The village is home to the Swiss Woodcarving School and several workshops and small museums dedicated to the craft. Intricate hand-carved wooden figures, animals, and decorative pieces made here are found in shops across Switzerland.
Late spring through early fall, from May to October, offers the best conditions for outdoor activities, lake cruises, and the Brienz Rothorn Railway. Summer brings warm weather ideal for swimming in Lake Brienz and hiking. Winter is quieter and can be very cold, but the snowy Alpine scenery is stunning.
German is the main language spoken in Brienz and across the Bernese Oberland region. English is widely understood in hotels, tourist offices, and attractions. Staff at major sites such as the Rothorn Railway and Ballenberg open-air museum are generally comfortable communicating in English.
The Bernese Oberland region is known for hearty mountain cuisine. Look for Rosti (crispy pan-fried potatoes), Zopf (braided bread), air-dried meats, locally made cheeses, and fresh fruit tarts. Many lakeside restaurants serve fresh-caught fish from Lake Brienz. Swiss chocolate and cheese fondue are popular with visitors throughout the region.
