Most international visitors fly into Madrid Barajas Airport (MAD), about three hours away, then travel by high-speed train or long-distance bus to Caceres. Seville Airport is around two and a half hours by car or bus. Badajoz Airport is the closest at roughly one hour but has very limited routes.
The old town of Caceres is best explored on foot, though its cobblestone streets can be steep and uneven. A car is highly recommended for exploring Extremadura, as many of the region's top attractions including national parks, monasteries, and Roman ruins are spread across rural areas with limited public transportation.
The historic old town has very uneven cobblestone streets and steep inclines that make it challenging for strollers and wheelchairs. The lower modern city is more accessible. Some key monuments have limited accessibility due to their historic nature. It's worth researching specific sites in advance if accessibility is a priority.
Caceres is a very safe city with a relaxed atmosphere. Crime rates are low. Standard precautions apply in busy areas. The old town is quiet in the evenings, which adds to its magical atmosphere but also means fewer people around, so it's good to stay aware of your surroundings after dark.
The UNESCO-listed old town (Ciudad Monumental) is the main draw, with highlights including the Plaza Mayor, Torre de Bujaco, Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo, and the Church of Santa Maria. Day trips to the nearby Monfrague National Park for birdwatching and the Roman ruins of Merida are also excellent options.
Spain uses the euro (EUR). Cards are widely accepted in Caceres, including in restaurants and shops throughout the old town. It's still worth carrying some cash for smaller establishments, local markets, and rural stops if you're exploring the wider Extremadura region.
The region of Extremadura is known for some of Spain's finest produce. Try Iberico ham (jamon iberico de bellota), Torta del Casar cheese (a creamy local specialty), migas (fried breadcrumbs with pork), and lamb dishes. The region also produces excellent wines and olive oil. The local gastrobar scene in Caceres is outstanding and internationally recognized.
Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are the best times to visit, with mild, pleasant weather perfect for exploring the old town on foot. Summers can be very hot in Extremadura, one of Spain's warmest regions. The WOMAD world music festival in May is a highlight worth planning around.
