Access to Crane Beach can be challenging. The Crane Resort offers a glass-walled elevator for guests (with a fee redeemable at the bar or restaurant), but the public access point involves a walk along an uneven coastal path. The beach itself is flat once you arrive, but the approach is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers without assistance.
The ocean at Crane Beach is best suited for confident swimmers. The beach faces the Atlantic, and there can be strong surf, undercurrents, and occasional riptides. It is an excellent spot for boogie boarding and wave riding. Families with young children may prefer calmer beaches on the island's southern or western coast.
Barbados uses the Barbadian dollar (BBD), which is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 2 BBD to 1 USD. US dollars are widely accepted across the island. Most hotels, restaurants, and shops also accept major credit cards, though having some local cash is handy for smaller vendors and beach stands.
December through April is peak season, offering the driest weather and most reliable sunshine. This is also the most popular and expensive time to visit. If you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices, the shoulder months of May, June, and November are a good alternative, though you may catch occasional tropical showers.
English is the official language of Barbados and is spoken by everyone on the island. Locals also speak Bajan Creole (known as Bajan), an English-based dialect with African influences. You will have no language barriers as a visitor, and Bajans are well known for being warm and welcoming to guests.
Bottom Bay Beach is a short drive away and offers a more secluded setting with dramatic cliffs and a sheltered arc of sand. Sam Lord's Castle and the Foursquare Rum Distillery are also nearby and worth a stop. The Barbados Concorde Experience is conveniently located close to the airport, which is just 15 minutes from Crane Beach.
Tipping is customary in Barbados. A 10% service charge is often added to restaurant bills, but it is common practice to leave an additional tip of 10 to 15% for good service. Tipping taxi drivers and hotel staff is also appreciated, though not obligatory.
Look for a fish cutter (a flying fish sandwich on a salt bread roll) at Cutters Deli, located just up the road from the beach. Macaroni pie, cou-cou, and flying fish (the national dish), and fresh rum punch are staples of Bajan cuisine well worth sampling during your visit.
