Bandung to Garut is about 64 km (40 miles), typically 1.5-2 hours by private car. Jakarta to Garut is about 220 km (137 miles), usually 4.5-6 hours depending on traffic through the Nagreg pass. Since it's a full day either way, an early departure gives you the most time at the sights.
